After our recent high praise on the Château Brande-Bergère 2016 we got another couple of mentions in the St-Valentine’s edition re (stunning value) Halves of Grand Cru Classé Sauternes plus “our very own” Mark Haisma that top Bogan in Burgundy 🇦🇺 🇫🇷.

But you clever people didn’t need The Spectator to work that one out. Just walk into my shop 🇬🇧 / store 🇺🇸…

A wee Pub crawl.

Firstly the Fox & Pheasant near Stamford Bridge. A taste off of their English onion soup versus the French onion soup at Josephine Bouchon. Very good English but I’m afraid the extra richness & flavour gives the gold medal to 🇫🇷 🥇.

Still, one of my favourite Pubs in London.

Next to the Anglesea Arms. Busy but not rammed like a usual Friday night. They have a nice, snug, dining room through at the back. Sunday lunches are certainly “a thing” in London Pubs. More to explore…

Despite almost permanent rain, you can feel the Spring is just around the corner.

Thursday & Friday morning meanderings, the West End & then Ladbroke Grove. The last picture, a Pub in Victoria, had no less than 5 rough sleepers. Time to think about “Catching Lives”, the Canterbury-based Homeless Charity…

Yesterday was all about Bordeaux. Bottles, Magnums, Double Magnums. Great Vintages, legendary Châteaux. Much more fun than just selling Provence rosé in July.

Not quite Breakfast At Tiffany’s but a Full English at 45, Jermyn Street, aka Fortnum & Mason.

A very generous birthday breakfast.

However, with decades of experience you’d hope it expect they’d get it right by now. Only speed makes breakfast even remotely difficult. The scrambled eggs were good, the mushroom not bad either but the rest fell apart quickly. Anemic tomatoe though at this time of year, no real surprise. The unforgivable bit is the inability to present half-decent bacon or sausage. The fault of almost all “fancy” breakfast abodes, they cook the bacon earlier & just leave to warm somewhere, meanwhile any notion of flavour has gradually evaporated. The sausage shrinking too as it cools. How difficult is it to have one pan dedicated to frying bacon & cook it, fresh?! Baked beans okay but hard to mess that up. The toast wasn’t toasted, it was bread, so it got sent back. Pot of tea was okay however. To get a good English Breakfast, remember the flavour of the bacon is the most important. A Bakery that has lousy croissants, would you go back?

A solid dining room however & the room was packed with 39-something Hedgies in their sleeveless tops & annoying back packs. So many backpacks (30+) in the cloak room that I thought a Troop of Boy Scouts or German parachutists were in the house.

Usually their Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru but these “Monday-to-Thursday wines”, bingo. Simple but pure entertainment.

Plat-du-jour at Josephine Bouchon. Today, small but delicious chicken in creamy tarragon sauce. Rice, a smidge over done. Soups-à-l’oignon, delish comme d’habitude.

In pichet of Jean Foillard. All in all, with so many restaurants fermé le lundi, a good call.

An advanced peek at one upcoming lot at Sloane Street Auctions next auction.
