Whether loved or hated, Chinese characters have undeniably been at the very core of North East Asian culture. While the necessity of learning them has largely faded in Korea, this book reminds us that the value of the stories embedded within them remains. The author selects key characters, traces their roots, and seamlessly navigates through the culture, history, and art woven around them. Though a heavy ”brick book“ weighing over 1kg, its generous length offers a slow, relaxed comfort to be savored over time.

호불호를 떠나, 동북아시아 문화권에서 한자가 문화의 핵심에 위치해 온 문자라는 사실에는 이견이 없을 것이다. 특히 한국에서는 한자를 꼭 알아야 할 필요가 거의 사라졌지만, 이 책은 그 문자에 깃든 이야기의 가치까지 사라진 것은 아니라는 점을 상기시켜 준다. 저자는 몇 가지 한자를 골라 주제로 삼아 그 근원을 더듬고 기록을 따라 얽혀 있는 문화와 역사, 예술을 종횡무진하며 펼쳐낸다. 1kg이 넘는 묵직한 벽돌책이지만, 오히려 이 두툼한 분량이 오래 곁에 두고 즐길 수 있는 느긋함과 편안함으로 느껴지는 그런 책.

한 달 쉬어 간 책책모 공지!

Catching up on to-do lists #1

While the storekeeper was away, we received a massive donation of children’s books—a whopping 82-volume collection of the Mr. Men and Little Miss series by Roger Hargreaves!

Many of you have left books on our pre-loved shelves hoping they would find new homes, but we’ve never received this many at once. We are incredibly grateful for the deep affection and the effort it took to bring such a heavy stack all the way to our shop.

At bommoi, we accept pre-loved book donations as long as they are free of missing pages, scribbles, or water damage. For more details on donating, please feel free to drop us a message!

책방지기가 자리를 비운 동안 실로 거대한 양의 어린이 책을 기부받았습니다. 로저 하그리브스의 감정 시리즈 전집, 무려 82권!

그동안 많은 분께서 다음 독자에게 다시 읽히기를 소망하며 봄모이 중고 서가에 책을 남겨주셨지만, 한 번에 이만큼 엄청난 양은 처음이네요. 서가의 존재를 잊지 않고 매장까지 그 무거운 책더미를 기꺼이 들고 와주시는 그 수고로움과 애정에 가슴 깊이 감사할 뿐입니다.
