A big thank you to everybody who messaged me after my latest newsletter. So many people sent me notes to add to the conversation, share a similar perspective, or to just say that they felt seen.

It always strikes me that, even when the details of our lives are different, there is so often commonality in our experiences - the things that occupy our minds, the areas of life we want to improve, our worries and concerns. None of us are really that different. And that is a lovely thing.

I’m always so glad when I write something and it resonates. And I’m always grateful when people send me a note to let me know.

(Also, you guys also seem to be liking the Cos shorts - they’re a goodie!)

Have a good week.

When flights get cancelled / disrupted / or otherwise have the potential to run out of fuel…you have a quick rethink and take the chance to spend two nights in Paris along the way. It wasn’t the plan - but I’m certainly not complaining.

This gorgeous place 👆🏼 has been in my saved ‘Places to Go’ folder for a couple of years so I was excited to finally stay here. Sadly though, we’ve lucked out as it’s fully booked for our dates. Nevermind. Next time - when we haven’t had to pivot (somewhat) last minute.

At this point it’s going to be a summer heavy on train travel and a relaxed mindset I think.

File this gorgeous hotel in your saved folder and thank me later.

This. Or That.

Stripes and round.
Or velvet and square.

There might be one you definitely prefer. Or you might feel a bit torn between the two.

Which is why one of the first things we do in Friday’s workshop is a little quiz to figure out your main interior style. Some people don’t think you need to define these things, but honestly? I really think it helps. Once you understand where different interior styles sit in relation to one another it can open your eyes for how to mix and match and achieve a home that feels effortlessly stylish.

So whether you go for the stripes or the olive velvet, it tells me just a little something about your preferred interior style.

x

P.S I’ll schedule another interiors workshop soon.

Both ottomans and that gorgeous Chinese lamp are available. Send me a DM or head to the online shop. We have a matching pair of each. But you can just buy one too if you wish. (This also tells me something about your interior style 😂)

Now that I have this cluster of Vincent van Dyson pots on the marble table, I’m not sure I can go back to the previous styling.

(Chalk this up to one of the pitfalls of using your own home to style items for the shop). On some level I want to keep everything for myself.

On a separate note: clustering items is a really effective styling trick to create impact. You can cluster with identical items, or similar items (as I’ve done here). Both work.

This (and so much more) on Friday for the Think Like an Interior Stylist workshop. Yay. Looking forward to it.

This week Claire from and I hosted a private shopping event for friends, clients and The Edit subscribers. It was an intimate affair - giving everyone a chance to chat with us and shop the limited collection.

Our Essentials Collection is a curation of items that we’ve mainly sourced from the UK and Europe. It’s limited both as a collection and also by quantity of each item. It’s intentionally small.

As interior stylists we’re bringing our styling expertise to this collection. What are the common items missing from people’s homes? Where are the gaps? What are we always suggesting? These are the items that make up the collection.

It’s not a permanent shop. But when we find things we love, we’ll host another shopping event. And afterwards we’ll upload items for online shopping. Once things are gone, we’re unlikely to order them again. So it’s a first in best dressed scenario.

The May collection will be online in the next day or two. I’ll post to Stories when it’s live and subscribers will get a link in their email.

We hope you love it. Here is a sneak peek…

Before you go putting up shelves in your home, first consider that you’ll actually need some objects to put on those shelves. I see so many ill conceived shelving systems in homes that draw your eye to them for all the wrong reasons - because there isn’t enough stuff on the shelves, or the stuff that’s there looks kind of random. Empty forlorn shelves with a hodge podge of items does not make the room look better - it actually makes it look worse. It kind of gives off ‘we only just moved here’ vibes. Or ‘our interior designer said we should do shelves but we don’t have the budget for objects so we found some random items to plonk on them instead’ vibes.

It’s not that I object to shelves - I love having surfaces in a home where you can display objects - books, trinkets, artwork, sculptural pieces etc. But if you are not someone who has a collection of these items, think twice before you decide to put up shelves. Those shelves need to be dressed. And if a designer suggests putting up shelves, ask them what portion of your overall budget will need to go towards sourcing pieces for the shelving. (Side note: sometimes (not always) these items really add up).

I cover off on this and so much more in the Think Like an Interior Stylist workshop. May’s workshop is sold out. But I’ll schedule another one for after the summer break. For those coming in May - I will be showing you how to style shelves, coffee tables, sideboards - we’ll even style the table for lunch. Fun times.

In the meantime, I give you some examples of shelves done well.

x

P.S. If you missed out on the workshop but would like to come to a future one, then consider signing up to the newsletter as I give newsletter peeps first priority. Up to you whether you actually read the newsletter but at least you’ll know if there’s something worth coming to or knowing about.

Finding good places to stay when you travel is not always easy, but we have been very lucky to rent some great places over the years - this one was a gorgeous pint sized mews house near Kensington Gardens in London.

I got up early (always…the beauty of jet lag) and made the kids porridge and myself a cup of tea to start the day. It was quiet. And I felt immensely happy to be back in London. So I grabbed the camera and took some snaps of the moment.

They show a beautiful tiny kitchen simply styled and perfect for a weary family who had travelled from Singapore.

Choosing a white paint for your home can be a whole thing - and because I live in a home that is painted white throughout - I get a fair few people messaging me to ask what colour of white I used. Sadly I can’t help them out because I didn’t paint my home (it’s a rental). And in any case, it is painted in the cheapest of paints and watered down at that. So my home is not a good place to be seeking out the best white paint on the market!

But - nor is anyone else’s homes that you only see on an image and here is why 👉🏼

As an interiors photographer I can tell you that white walls in an image are rarely as they appear in real life - simply because we go in and edit the shot. We balance out the whites to create whatever white we think is best for the image - from creamy to cool tones - the white you see in an image is the hand of the photography editing process and not actually a paint colour.

To find a paint colour for you home - white or otherwise, you really need to go old-school and buy sample pots and paint the colour in a few places within the room(s) to see how the colour appears in shadow and in light. Only then can you pick the best white paint for your home. There really isn’t a shortcut.

When I was choosing a white for France, I painted samples on the door frames, the wall, in the corners and out in the open. I viewed the colour at different times of the day to see how it looked from different perspectives before I chose.

Side note: the biggest challenge when shooting interiors in Singapore (especially landed homes) is the green hue that is reflected from the jungle across everything. There is A LOT of correcting whites in Singapore!

The sound of Singapore is white noise. Fans overhead. The hum of a dehumidifier. The air conditioning on, cooling the house down. Sometimes all three thrum together helping to beat back the heat and humidity. A soft constant whirr of noise in our homes that we barely register.

It’s bird song and the sound of a wood pe**er. A cockerel crowing at all hours of the day. Buddy, the day has started. No need. We’re all up.

It’s the sound of Filipina’s laughing and chatting as they walk the dogs. Their voices carrying through the neighbourhood. A chance to start the day with their friends.

It’s the leaf blowers. Oh the endless leaf blowers and their whining crescendo each time the handle is squeezed. A noise that everyone wishes didn’t exist. Whatever happened to brooms? The rhythmic scraping sweep of a broom on a path gathering leaves into a pile.

These are the sounds of this morning from where I am. Singapore.

“You don’t need a new body for new clothes. You need better fitting ones”.

I read this the other day and it really resonated with me. I am not at all surprised that midlife is a time when many women - myself included - lose their way with fashion. Bodies change and it takes so long for our wardrobes to catch up.

There can be nostalgia for the way things were / and also a love for items in your wardrobe that you really don’t want to move on from. Don’t you think?

I am still finding my new go-to brands. Today I had a quick catch up with a fashion stylist friend and she has kindly offered to do a little online scouting for me for some new pieces.

Having someone that actually knows brands and can unearth things for you is a game changer. Because endlessly scrolling through websites is like falling down a black hole of hopelessness and time wasting.

1. My most recent purchase was a pair of combats which I am madly in love with. These are not them, but I included a link to the ones I bought in last months newsletter.

2. I would so love a pair of white jeans but try as I might they never look good on me. Ever. Sad times. I love them.

3. I just bought yesterday two pairs of longer Bermuda style denim shorts. I’ll let you know when I get them if I recommend them. Let’s see. I have high hopes.

4. I need new footwear but I just can’t get on board with the mesh see-through shoes.

5. But I am thinking of buying a pair of ballet flats. Maybe boring but also classic. And I’m in need. I would also love some loafers but can we wear them in Singapore? I’m not sure.
