Before you go putting up shelves in your home, first consider that you’ll actually need some objects to put on those shelves. I see so many ill conceived shelving systems in homes that draw your eye to them for all the wrong reasons - because there isn’t enough stuff on the shelves, or the stuff that’s there looks kind of random. Empty forlorn shelves with a hodge podge of items does not make the room look better - it actually makes it look worse. It kind of gives off ‘we only just moved here’ vibes. Or ‘our interior designer said we should do shelves but we don’t have the budget for objects so we found some random items to plonk on them instead’ vibes.
It’s not that I object to shelves - I love having surfaces in a home where you can display objects - books, trinkets, artwork, sculptural pieces etc. But if you are not someone who has a collection of these items, think twice before you decide to put up shelves. Those shelves need to be dressed. And if a designer suggests putting up shelves, ask them what portion of your overall budget will need to go towards sourcing pieces for the shelving. (Side note: sometimes (not always) these items really add up).
I cover off on this and so much more in the Think Like an Interior Stylist workshop. May’s workshop is sold out. But I’ll schedule another one for after the summer break. For those coming in May - I will be showing you how to style shelves, coffee tables, sideboards - we’ll even style the table for lunch. Fun times.
In the meantime, I give you some examples of shelves done well.

P.S. If you missed out on the workshop but would like to come to a future one, then consider signing up to the newsletter as I give newsletter peeps first priority. Up to you whether you actually read the newsletter but at least you’ll know if there’s something worth coming to or knowing about.
