Genwell launched with everything I knew from thirteen years of running Gemstory. Same instincts, same workflows, just a new name and a new direction. For a while, that felt like enough.
Then I noticed the same pattern I'd just walked away from creeping back in. I was busy, delivering, saying yes to every opportunity. But the way I was actually running the business hadn't changed underneath it all.
Looking back, this has always been how I work. Build something, take it apart, rebuild it better. Gemstory taught me that cycle first, the pushcart, the boutique, and eventually the flagship store, each version dismantled and rebuilt as I learned more about what worked. But I've come to realise it was never really about building and destroying. It was about restoring myself back to a baseline every time life or business pulled me off it. A person doesn't burn out from one hard day. The baseline itself quietly shifts under sustained pressure, and most of us don't notice until it's shifted a long way from where we started.
For a long time, I was one of those owners who avoided this next rebuild. I knew AI was reshaping how businesses ran, but I kept putting off actually learning it. Not because I didn't believe in it, but because relearning a workflow I'd relied on for over a decade felt disruptive in a way I wasn't ready for.
I've always led with feeling, intuition, reading a room, sensing what someone needed before they said it out loud. It got me far. It also meant systems and structure never came naturally to me.
A lot of people fear AI because they assume it replaces exactly this kind of thinking. My own experience was the opposite. AI didn't replace my instinct, it gave me somewhere to put it. The more I used it, the more organised my own thinking became, not because a machine was thinking for me, but because it kept asking me to be clearer about what I actually meant.
A year later, Genwell runs on a completely different backbone than it did when I first launched it. Faster, leaner, and honestly more me than the old version ever was.
