A heartfelt thank you to Assoc Prof Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim and Dr Syed Harun Alhabsyi for taking the time to visit Kampong Gelam and engage with our stakeholders.

We would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dr Syed Harun on his appointed as Co-Chair of the Inter-Agency Task Force for Heritage Businesses, Traditional Activities and Cultural Life.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to discuss the aspirations, opportunities and challenges faced by heritage businesses and community stakeholders in Kampong Gelam. We look forward to working with Dr Syed Harun and continuing our collaboration with the Task Force to preserve our rich heritage while ensuring Kampong Gelam remains a vibrant and thriving district for generations to come.

Did you know❓Before Kampong Gelam became famous for its heritage, food and colourful streets, it was known for something much simpler — the Gelam tree.

These trees were so abundant here that they gave the district its name. Their leaves produced medicinal oil, their bark was used for roofing, and their wood helped support early coastal communities. In a way, every visit to Kampong Gelam begins with a tree.🌳
