A postwar wooden rice ration signboard, dated 15 January 1946.

During the years following World War II, rice was issued only to registered holders of civilian ration cards due to food shortages.
Signboards like this once stood outside provision shops throughout Singapore but are seldom seen today.

This piece has already been sold and is posted just to share.

A Marriage Agreement from the Last Year of Imperial
China -

This agreement was executed in 1911, the final year of the Qing Dynasty and the last year of Imperial rule in China.

It bears an official Qing Dynasty revenue stamp, showing that the document was legally recognized over a century ago.

Shortly after this agreement was signed, the Xinhai Revolution brought an end to the Qing Dynasty and ushered in the Republic of China.

An unusual ceramic ashtray from Great Eastern Life Assurance Co. Ltd.

What makes it particularly interesting is the apparent contradiction. An insurance company exists to promote financial security and lives, yet here we have an ashtray - a souvenir that, by today's standards, seems to
encourage smoking!
Of course, this reflects a very different time. Decades ago, smoking was socially accepted and branded ashtrays were common promotional items distributed by businesses of all kinds. The health risks associated with smoking were not as widely recognized or emphasized as they are today.

This humble ashtray is therefore more than just a smoking accessory. It is a small reminder of how attitudes, marketing practices, and public awareness have changed over the years.

A fascinating piece of advertising history and a conversation starter from a bygone era.
