I would like to introduce you to my family jewellery store. In the 1930s, my great-grandfather, Tan Eng Geok, arrived in colonial Singapore after a long seaward journey from Kinmen. One of thousands of Chinese immigrants, he was in search of a better life for his family during the Japanese Occupation. He had knowledge of Chinese traditional jewellery design and scrimped and saved to set up a proper store on the first floor of our 2-storey family shop-house. Kim Poh Hong was born in 1938 on 41 China Street and remains till today, a family-owned traditional jewellery store passed on to the 3rd generation of the Tan Family. Our store initially carried Chinese traditional designs but some Nonya customers began to bring their Peranakan jewellery including kerosangs for trade-ins and repairs and at times to replace a lost intan or Berlian. Slowly, Kim Poh Hong's interest and expertise in Peranakan jewellery grew and so did our collection of Peranakan jewellery and other heritage jewellery. My two aunties, now managing the store, continue to search for vintage and antique Peranakan jewellery. They also custom make new jewellery based on old Peranakan designs as well as Enamel design jewellery. Our in-store craftsman has been in the business for more than 50 years and can readily modify or repair your precious Peranakan jewellery. Step into the store and be greeted with a variety of vintage Peranakan jewellery such as kerosangs, necklaces, earrings, bracelets as well as new Peranakan inspired jewellery. There is also a not-for-sale showcase of Singapore's heritage jewellery such as jade jewellery, enamelled jewellery, traditional Chinese jewellery and Peranakan artifacts collected over the years.
