The Family Behind the Music 🎶
When Mdm Quek Puoy Koon needed a team, she turned to the people she trusted most — her sons. They each resigned from their jobs to become the pillars of Roxy Records And Trading.
Paul managed customer relations and delivered Teochew cassettes to retail shops. Sia oversaw the production of Teochew opera cassettes. Richard handled the import of vinyl records, CDs and cassettes — and later introduced calendars, posters and t-shirts featuring the artists. A close relative kept the accounts in order.
Rooted in their shophouse days on Hill Street, the heart of the business remained the same: bringing Teochew opera dramas to life on cassette and vinyl.
When they moved to their first shop at Funan, space was tight — small and narrow. Cassettes and CDs were neatly arranged in boxes so customers could browse with ease.
Behind the scenes, Sia faced real challenges producing the Teochew opera dramas. With little more than a brief demonstration as training, he relied on his mechanical engineering background to master the craft through trial and error — even teaching himself to repair the cassette decks.
A family business built on passion, perseverance, and Teochew heritage. 🎭
How many of you remember coming to this shop?
