“If you make your child into the perfect object that these schools want to purchase, then you might make the sale. However, will you get what you want?”

In ’American Hagwon’ by Min Jin Lee, we meet the Koh family: John and Helen Koh and their three children, Bo, DH and Mido. Their lives are thrown into turmoil following a heartbreaking betrayal and the 1997 Asian financial collapse, forcing them to leave behind their once-stable lives in South Korea. John and Helen’s decisions move the family from place to place, in hopes of securing their children’s futures.

They eventually settle on a home in Southern California. Through the Koh family and the community around them, the novel explores the deeply ingrained belief that education is the only path to financial independence, social status and other imaginable forms of success. It also emphasises the weight of parental expectations and how cultural values shape family dynamics and one’s ambitions.

As the family struggles to realign their aspirations with reality, they begin to question the demands of success and whether it is worth sacrificing everything else they have, and could have had, for it.

“Sebald’s tents spread out along a pebble beach,
Along wires of salt. How they just want to be in a

Place where they have the world behind them, and before them nothing but emptiness. I imagine these

people never speaking to each other, in tents eight feet apart, looking out at the same open. During

her later years, Joan Mitchell said, I became the sunflower, the lake, the tree. I no longer exist.” 🌻

‘Tree of Knowledge’ is a collection of poems that explore the connection between imagery of trees, branches and the human experience. The images resurface like apparitions across the collection, probing the reader to think about their own connection with nature. 🌳

Winner of the Forward Prize, Victoria Chang’s commitment to trees as a motif in this collection makes their presence and absence more striking when reading. The presence and awareness of absence of those same trees echoes in the human experience of being present or absent in our own or others lives. 🌷

Bringing in personal, historical and natural loss and memory is thought-provoking, while her reflections on the afterlife and ageing are also moving. Like a tree, these set of poems branch out to different aspects of life that every reader will relate to. 🍂

“All systems collapsed eventually—and if they collapsed, that meant there was space for something better.” 💬

In the authoritarian Federation, a plot against the seemingly immortal President threatens to destabilise an already fragile regime. In the West, where human leaders have been replaced by AI Prime Ministers, a malfunctioning artificial mind threatens to unravel the promise of a new political order.
As both worlds teeter on the brink of crisis, brilliant scientist Lilia finds herself caught in a struggle that spans continents and reaches into the highest echelons of power. Around her, a disparate cast of dissidents, political insiders and reluctant revolutionaries confronts a world increasingly shaped by surveillance, technological upheaval and authoritarian ambition.

Following his acclaimed debut, The Mountain in the Sea, Ray Nayler delivers a gripping near-future thriller of geopolitical intrigue and artificial intelligence. Where the Axe Is Buried is a timely, unsettling exploration of power, resistance and the fragile foundations of human freedom.

“Never mistake maintenance for care, attention for love, or even love for empathy.”

Famesick by Lena Dunham is a personal memoir from the filmmaker, writer, and actor widely credited for her work on HBO’s Girls.

Dunham reflects on her struggles with chronic illness, the fleeting thrills of success, the constant scrutiny under the public eye, and her high-profile relationships. Beneath all the fame, Dunham articulates the loneliness of being deeply misunderstood.

Her story details the painful price a celebrity has to pay, while identifying the indisputable lapses in women’s healthcare in America. Ultimately, ‘Famesick’ offers a deeper meaning of being, being loved, and being be truly understood, and how easily we mistake one for another.

“The world can be so humbling, but only if you let it humble you.”

In The Age of Magical Overthinking, Amanda Montell explores why we tend to overthink, jump to conclusions and convince ourselves of things that may not be true. Through examples from everyday life, relationships and social media, she looks at how our minds can turn small uncertainties into bigger problems.

What makes the book interesting is how relatable these habits are, from holding on to something simply because we have already invested so much in it, to forming strong opinions about people we barely know. Montell approaches these topics with humour and personal stories, making psychology feel less intimidating and encouraging readers to be more aware of their own thinking patterns without being too hard on themselves.

“Books. I looked things up in books. No cyber trail. There are only so many ways to kill people, and it hasn’t changed much over the years.”

According to friends Pam, Nancy, Marlene and Shalisa, the perfect retirement plan meant lounging in a hot tub sipping margaritas and enjoying endless freedom.

But that fantasy shattered after a freak accident, and their husbands separately lost their life savings in a reckless investment. Frustrated by their circumstances, the ladies began entertaining a morbid thought of collecting their husbands’ life insurance as it seemed more appealing than growing old with them. Little do they know, that their husbands too have a few tricks up their sleeves.

Darkly humours and wickedly entertaining, Sue Hincenbergs’ ‘The Retirement Plan’ makes a perfect laugh-out-loud read for the weekend. Grab your copy now at Littered with Books! 📚

Alessa Li is kidnapped and forced to enrol at the Hellebore Technical Institute for the Gifted, a school home to Anti-Christs and Ragnaroks, students unquestionably familiar with destruction and apocalypse.

Graduation is Alessa’s remaining hope for freedom and a return to an ordinary life. But what awaits her instead is far from the escape she had hoped for.

Graduation day brings an unwanted surprise. Monsters are unleashed, and a merciless hunt for the students begins. Alessa and a handful of classmates find refuge in the school library. However, a human sacrifice must be made every night to hold off the beasts.

Trapped with nowhere to run, the lines between monsters and human beings begin to blur. Grappling with the unthinkable lengths one may selfishly resort to, the deadliest monsters may not even be monsters at all.

Gruesome, chilling, and full of suspense, ‘The Library at Hellebore’ by Cassandra Khaw brings together dark academia, body horror, and psychological thriller in one hellish world.

“…human curiosity about what other humans are thinking about them is inexhaustible, together with a sense that the curiosity ultimately is futile because the mind starts to stagger as we plumb the depths of thoughts about thoughts about thoughts” 💭

When we think of common knowledge, we think of information that everyone has to know. The more important yet less seldom thing we think about is how powerful common knowledge is in bringing communities together, in both the private and public sphere 🌎

Steven Pinker expands on game theory, philosophy and common knowledge, showing how it is a core feature in human social organisations. From the reasons of laughter to political power, ‘When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows’ is an exposition on the role of common knowledge in human society’. 🧬

“Reading is the ultimate personal experience. It goes without saying that even when people read the same book, each person will be touched by different parts of it.” - The Friday Bookshop, Sawako Natori.

Fumiya Kurai, our protagonist, is in search of a particular book for his dying father, when he visits a seemingly ordinary yet charming little bookshop in the subway station in Kanto, The Friday Bookshop.

The Friday Bookshop has been rumoured to “connect you with the book you need” . The story unfolds like a coming-of-age tale, where Fumiya decided to work at the bookshop part-time and discovers more than he expects. Following the same main characters, each chapter feels like a story of its own.
