The project benefits from the extensive research conducted by Fondazione Prada in close collaboration with Rem Koolhaas and Giulio Margheri, Associate Architect at OMA. The expertise of Sietske Fransen, Max Planck Research Group Leader, Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History, was instrumental.

As stated by Rem Koolhaas, “In my view, the diagram has been an almost permanent tool. For example, in the early stages of our research, we discovered three-dimensional diagrams from South Africa dating back to 40,000 BCE, as well as wood-carved maps of the Greenlandic coastline made on the island of Ammassalik. This demonstrates that the diagram is an enduring form of communication that adapts to whatever medium exists at the time. Regardless of the medium, a diagram serves didactic (explanatory) or suggestive (persuasive) purposes. This means that it not only exists by default in any new medium but can also be applied to virtually any area of human life. Fashion, religion, or the history of social inequality can be interpreted as a diagram. I deeply enjoy this interdisciplinary aspect of the diagram, its invariable attribute—its independence from language (words) makes it one of the most effective forms of representation.”

The visual and textual contributions in this volume take shape from a series of questions that place at the center of reflection the role of artistic and design practices in the production of knowledge. What tools can we adopt when words are no longer sufficient to describe what surrounds us? How can we construct new languages and new imaginaries capable of giving form to experience, uncertainty, and the complexity of our present? What does it mean today to produce knowledge through practice, at a historical moment when the boundaries between discipline and action, between theory and project, between art and life are becoming increasingly blurred? How do artists and designers use the tools of their practices to question reality, deconstruct dominant narratives, and propose alternative perspectives?

The volume gathers and weaves together the works and writings of more than one hundred artists, designers, scholars, and thinkers who, through different approaches, languages, and sensibilities, explore the possibility of generating knowledge through image, gesture, form, and action. The aim is to shed light on how visual practices can not only represent the world but also have an impact on it, activating processes of situated, critical, and transformative knowledge.

The Art of Daniel Warren Johnson showcases the majority of DWJ’s kinetic career since his start in 2012. There are a multitude of sections covering his favorite comic-book covers and pages, along with rarely seen commissions and personal works, preliminaries and cover thumbnails. Full access was given to his personal sketchbooks, allowing for a deep look at over 200 sketches that are presented in a dynamic and exciting way.

This sizable book reveals great detail by sharing extended commentary covering DWJ’s thoughts and pathos for almost every piece. This collection has been methodically put together from the original art and through numerous interview sessions with DWJ over the span of four years. This is a highly collaborative book between Flesk and the artist. This team worked in unison on every aspect to bring you the works that DWJ was most excited to draw, that were the most challenging and that were the most rewarding. Each piece is perfectly curated to balance the artist’s wins and his struggles.

All the elements of his career and artistry are presented in a beautiful and organically designed volume to make you feel as if you are sitting alongside DWJ while he takes you through his first decade in the industry.
