Ed Thigpen - Out Of The Storm, 1966. I picked up this title because of the stellar lineup that accompanied Ed. What a cast! himself is no slouch being part of the Oscar Peterson Trio. On this record he experiments with a tuned drum, but main leads are Clark Terry and Kenny Burrell. Overall an easy to listen record with a quintet that could do no wrong.

Chet Baker - Four In Tokyo, 1989/2021. The main concern with Chet’s later work is over his loss of tone, especially in his European sessions. This set recorded in Tokyo has none of that and you hear this almost immediately as he gets going in the opening track Four. This is one of his strongest records in his later years perhaps urged on by the wonderful accompaniment he receives from . Unfortunately, this is his last recorded work before Chet’s untimely death a few months later.

Nat Birchall - Afro Trane, 2022. I was a little unsure at first with this being a tribute album, but from past experiences Nat Birchall has never failed to bring something special and unique to the table. As one of the leading proponents of current UK jazz, Birchall plays all the instruments on this album which consist of covers and new compositions. The Coltrane influence is clear but the modern spiritual element is evident enough to make this album cool enough to stand on its own. Whether you revere Coltrane or not, this is an enjoyable album to listen to.

Been awhile since I listened to a Tone Poet. Pulled this gem out because of what Art Taylor brought to the session. Could have easily been a drum-led record. Another great session and excellent record from the audiophile series.
