Hard Rock by Earthen Vessel is one of the great cult records of the early-'70s American Christian psychedelic underground – an explosive collision of spiritual lyrics, male and female vocals and some seriously heavy fuzz-wah guitar.

Formed in Lansing, Michigan, Earthen Vessel emerged at the dawn of the American Jesus Rock movement but sounded considerably heavier and stranger than the term might suggest. The group combined its Christian message with the volume and intensity of contemporary psychedelic and hard rock, creating music packed with distorted guitar, pounding rhythm section, keyboards, harmonica and extended instrumental passages.

The album was recorded in Nashville in 1971 with a line-up featuring Sharon Keel on lead vocals, keyboards and percussion, Dave Caudill on electric and acoustic guitar, vocals and harmonica, Ken Fitch on keyboards, vocals and percussion, John Sprunger on bass, vocals and trumpet, and Ed Johnson on drums.

Opener Life Everlasting immediately sets the tone with its combination of impassioned vocals and scorching guitar, while You Can and Let Jesus Bring You Back push the band's raw, garage-like psychedelic sound even harder. The album's centrepiece is the lengthy I've Been Walkin', an extended heavy psych workout driven by fuzz guitar and an insistent rhythm section. Coming Home and Get High complete an album that remains one of the most distinctive examples of early American Christian psychedelia.

Musically, think Jefferson Airplane colliding with the primitive force of The Stooges, with plenty of fuzz, wah-wah and acid-rock jamming thrown into the mix. Long prized by collectors, Hard Rock has become a genuine underground classic for fans of private-press psych, proto-heavy rock and obscure early-'70s American rock.

First Tribute To Black Sabbath documents an extraordinary and little-known chapter in the birth of heavy metal: Scottish band Iron Claw performing Black Sabbath songs at the very moment Sabbath's revolutionary sound was first emerging.

The story began on November 16, 1969, when Iron Claw bassist Alex Wilson recorded Black Sabbath performing at Rugman's Youth Club in Dumfries, Scotland. Deeply impressed by what they heard, the young musicians began adding Sabbath material to their own live set, learning songs directly from concerts and tapes at a time when some of the material had not yet even appeared on record.

The results preserved here are remarkable. Iron Claw's versions of Evil Woman, Wicked World and Sleeping Village / Warning date from around the period of Black Sabbath's debut, while their performances of Fairies Wear Boots and Walpurgis – the early version of War Pigs – were recorded on July 16, 1970, more than two months before Paranoid was released.

Far from polished modern tribute versions, these are raw recordings of teenagers in Scotland absorbing the new language of heavy rock almost as it was being invented. Crushing riffs, primitive amplification and the rough live atmosphere give the performances genuine historical weight as well as enormous appeal to fans of early heavy rock, proto-metal and doom.

Iron Claw would soon develop their own formidable heavy sound, but these recordings capture the group at its very beginning and make a convincing case for them as one of the earliest – perhaps the earliest – bands to build a repertoire around Black Sabbath material.

STONEY & THE JAGGED EDGE - Chasing Rainbows

Big Beat's excavations of Jeep Holland's A-Square imprint continue with the exciting discovery of a true Detroit holy grail - the long-lost session by Stoney & The Jagged Edge, one of the premier attractions at the Grande Ballroom during the halcyon "high energy"days of the late 1960s.

Contemporaries of the MC5 and Stooges, the Edge were equally as cutting edge, with a wild stage presence and notorious, enigmatic frontman in Dave "Stoney" Mazar. The quartet burned briefly but fiercely between early 1967 and late 1968, leaving only some indelible memories with the few that witnessed ones in action, and studio session supervised by Holland at Detroit's United Sound, which in the ensuing decades was believed lost.

Now that a source has surfaced, the world can hear what it missed - prime 1968 Grande Ballroom psychedelia, with the power and punk edge that only Detroit can provide. Cuts like 'Rainbows', 'Can't Find The Key' and 'Crystal Rain' fully justify the Jagged Edge's legend, and this special vinyl release is cause for vintage psych of fanses to celebrate. Tony Iommi, founding member of Black Sabbath and one of heavy metal's absolute pioneers, is back with his first new solo album in 21 years and his first full-length release since Black Sabbath's farewell album 13.

The album From The Dark features eight inventive, magnificent, and captivating tracks, created in collaboration with long-time producer Mike Exeter. The result is one of 2026's most significant rock releases, where heavy riffs, rich soundscapes, and impressive musical details come together in perfect harmony. At the same time, Iommi delivers some of the strongest guitar performances of his career.

The first single "World Alone" is an up-tempo, guitar-driven track with Tony Iommi's characteristic, monumental riffs at its core. This beautifully curated boxed set of Charles Mingus’ studio output for Atlantic Records is an important commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the legendary bassist and composer’s birth, bringing together the last phase of his music. 2022 marked the 100th birthday of Charles Mingus, whose musical legacy is still ongoing. After his death in 1979, Mingus became acknowledged as one of the most important American composers in the jazz idiom, after Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. While his accomplishments as a bassist were startling and innovative, as a composer Mingus was equally inventive. He looked both forward and backward— drawing inspiration from his predecessors and introduced new concepts of melody, rhythm, harmony, and form as tools to be wielded by future generations. His compositions are now firmly ensconced in jazz’s core repertoire, as evidenced in this stunning boxset spanning Mingus’ final studio recordings for Atlantic Records. Charles Mingus began his first contract with Atlantic Records in 1956 with the career-defining Pithecanthropus Erectus, released under the name: The Charlie Mingus Jazz Workshop. While the contract was non-exclusive, he followed up his Atlantic debut with The Clown and Tonight At Noon before recording for several other labels in the period between 1956 and 1961. In 1973 Atlantic Records began its second period of recording with Mingus, which resulted in seven studio albums. The story of a new phase in Mingus’ music – his last phase – begins with the recordings in this boxed set. Featuring all of his 1970’s output for Atlantic Records, all configurations of the album include previously unreleased outtakes of “Big Alice”, “The Call” and “Music For Todo Modo”. There is also an extra set of takes of “Big Alice” and “The Call” on an Outtakes disc exclusive to the vinyl format.

BULLANGUS -

Originally released by Mercury Records in 1971, the self-titled debut by Bullangus is a powerful example of early American hard rock developing beyond its blues-based foundations. The New York six-piece combined muscular twin-guitar riffs, Hammond organ, forceful rhythms and the soulful lead vocals of Frankie Previte, creating a dense sound with elements of psychedelia, progressive rock and heavy blues. “Run Don’t Stop” opens the album with driving guitars and an immediate hard-rock attack, while “Mother’s Favorite Lover (Margaret)” adds prominent organ and an unusually funky groove. “Uncle Duggie’s Fun Bus Ride” balances melodic vocal harmonies with adventurous instrumental passages, and the extended “A Time Like Ours” reveals the band’s more progressive side through shifting dynamics and interlocking guitar work. The second side stretches into longer and more varied performances. “Miss Casey” develops through heavy riffs, organ flourishes and multiple changes of direction, while “Pot of Gold” is one of the record’s most melodic and accessible songs. The acoustic “Cy” provides a reflective contrast before “No Cream for the Maid” closes the album with a dramatic mixture of hard rock, blues and progressive complexity. Although Bullangus remained largely overlooked during their original lifetime, their debut has become increasingly valued by collectors of obscure early-1970s heavy rock. This Survival Research vinyl edition makes the band’s distinctive first album available again in its original eight-track configuration.

Ellison were formed in Montreal in late 1967 by Vincent Marandola, Richard Arcand, Robert Cager and Christian Tremblay. The band started playing quite frequently in and around Montreal, and actually played a few other gigs in Quebec. They recorded their one and only LP in 1971, originally released on Trans–World Records.

Here’s a welcome reissue of this rare and sought–after album.
