“I do not want to practise.” A child may not know how to explain that the keys feel uneven, that one note jumps out too loudly, or that their hands feel tense when they try to play. They may not have the words for “touch consistency” or “keyboard response”.

When most people today think of Japanese pianos and immediately turn to Yamaha or Kawai. But our advice is to listen beyond the name on the fallboard.

These two brands became globally recognised, widely distributed, and trusted across players. For many families, teachers, and institutions, they became the default reference point for Japanese pianos. Which is understandable but they were not the whole story.

During Japan’s golden era of piano making, especially around the 1980s, the industry was far more varied than many people realise. Beyond Yamaha and Kawai, there were many other Japanese piano names — Atlas, Apollo, Toyo, Diapason, Flora, Dresden, Ellington, Kreutzer, Fukuyama, and more.

Japanese piano culture was never only about one sound, one brand, or one idea of quality. Today, many of these names are less visible, but they remain part of the story that shaped the reputation of Japanese pianos. And this is why we always encourage customers to listen beyond the name on the fallboard.

Anyone can be impressed by power. The real test is softness. When choosing a grand piano, many people naturally play loudly first. They want to hear the bass, the projection, the fullness, and the authority of the instrument.

But a refined grand piano often reveals itself most clearly when you do the opposite. At a lower dynamic, there is less to hide behind. The action has to respond cleanly. The hammers have to speak with control. The tone has to remain alive without becoming thin or disappearing. The pianist should be able to shape colour, phrase endings, and quiet passages without forcing the instrument to cooperate.
