- How much substrate does your planted tank actually need?
Before you pour that entire bag of substrate into your aquarium… let’s talk about getting the amount and depth right!
For most planted tanks, 5-10cm of substrate is a great starting point. Aim for around 5cm at the front, gradually building up to 10cm towards the back.
This gives your plants room to establish their roots while creating more depth in your aquascape.
60 × 30 × 36cm tank benchmark:
You’ll need approximately 13.5L of substrate for a 5-10cm gradient.
