Do All Vinyl Floors Need Underlay Foam? The Answer Is: Not Always.

One of the most common questions we’ve received recently is:
Why doesn’t your flooring require underlay foam?

It’s a great question, and we’d like to clear up the misconception.

Underlay foam is commonly used beneath SPC flooring to:

✔️ Reduce footstep noise.
✔️ Help bridge very minor subfloor imperfections.
✔️ Distribute walking pressure more evenly to protect the click-lock system.

However, more isn’t always better.

A common misconception is that adding a thicker or softer foam will make the floor feel more comfortable. In reality, using the wrong underlay can actually create more problems than benefits.

It may:
❌Cause excessive movement when walking.
❌Place additional stress on the click-lock joints.
❌Increase the risk of joint separation or failure over time.
❌Potentially void the manufacturer’s warranty.

Another important point to understand is that foam does not fix an uneven floor. If your existing subfloor is uneven, adding foam won’t level it. Instead, the extra movement can make the locking system even more sensitive, leading to squeaking, gaps, or damaged joints over time.
