New Works by Yuko Sekino

Based in Tamba, Hyogo Prefecture, glass artist Yuko Sekino creates vessels distinguished by their gentle forms and the delicate expressions of air bubbles held within the glass.

Her latest collection includes sake ware and cups in which countless bubbles appear to float quietly beneath the surface, catching the light and giving each piece a unique sense of depth and movement. While each vessel carries the individuality of a handcrafted work, Sekino’s pieces are also designed to sit naturally in everyday life—bringing a subtle beauty to moments of drinking and dining.

Toukaji Bowl – The Colour of Peach Blossoms
Ceramic artist Nobuyuki Kimura has devoted much of his practice to exploring the expressive possibilities of glaze and colour. Born into a ceramic family in Kyoto, he develops his distinctive hues through repeated experiments in glaze blending and meticulous test firing.

Among his signature expressions is Toukaji, a delicate pale pink reminiscent of peach blossoms in spring. Achieving this gentle colour requires a precise balance of glaze composition and firing conditions, giving each vessel subtle variations in tone and depth.

The Toukaji Bowl embodies this pursuit of colour in a quiet, graceful form. Its softly luminous pink changes gently with the surrounding light, revealing the sensitivity and refinement characteristic of Kimura’s work.

Many Expressions, One Artist – Sake Ware by Nobuyuki Kimura

Ceramic artist Nobuyuki Kimura reveals a remarkable range of expression through his collection of sake ware. Created by the hands of a single artist, each guinomi possesses its own character, inviting us to discover the breadth of his approach to clay and glaze.

Kimura is known for his oil-spot Tenmoku, with its deep, lustrous surface and shimmering patterns. Equally captivating are his celadon works, where delicate kan-nyu crackles spread across the softly coloured glaze, creating a quiet sense of depth and refinement.

Though made as sake cups, these intimate vessels can also be enjoyed as tea cups, allowing their varied textures and forms to become part of different daily rituals.

From the Studio of Masaaki Iwasa in Izumo

Recently, HULS Gallery founder Yusuke Shibata visited the studio of ceramic artist Masaaki Iwasa in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture. Surrounded by the quiet landscape of the region, Iwasa continues his ceramic practice while also serving as the head priest of a Buddhist temple.

One of the distinctive expressions of his work is tōtai shikki—ceramic vessels finished with layers of lacquer. Bringing together the qualities of clay and urushi, these pieces possess a subtle depth and warmth that reveal themselves gradually through use.

Alongside his lacquered ceramics, Iwasa creates cups and plates characterised by calm tones, understated textures, and gentle forms. Their quiet presence allows them to settle naturally into everyday life.

Tea Ware by Junzo Maekawa

Ceramic artist Junzo Maekawa brings a refined contemporary sensibility to Tokoname ware, a ceramic tradition with a long history in Aichi Prefecture and one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns.

His teapots are particularly suited to the careful preparation of gyokuro and other fine Japanese or Chinese teas. Their considered proportions and quiet presence reflect an understanding of tea ware not simply as a vessel, but as a tool that shapes the experience of brewing and appreciating tea.

Maekawa’s distinctive surfaces and restrained details give each piece a subtle individuality, while remaining deeply connected to the tradition of Tokoname—a region renowned for its teapots and tea culture.

Through reflections on craft, Japanese aesthetics, the regions where objects are made, and their place in everyday life, the book shares the perspective that has shaped HULS Gallery over the years.

Ceramic artist Shunji Kikuchi brings warmth and charm to a beloved Japanese icon through his handcrafted porcelain Maneki-neko. With their gentle expressions and refined forms, these welcoming cats embody both traditional symbolism and contemporary simplicity.

Alongside the classic colours, a new Red edition has now joined the collection. Long associated in Japan with vitality, celebration, and good fortune, the vibrant red finish offers a fresh interpretation while preserving the quiet elegance that defines Kikuchi’s work.
