Incognito helped bring jazz-funk, soul and acid jazz into a new era.

Formed in London by guitarist, producer and bandleader Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick, the group became one of the defining acts of the British acid jazz movement.

Their sound brought together funk grooves, soul vocals, jazz harmony, Latin rhythm and polished arrangements — music built for both the dance floor and serious musicianship.

Albums such as Inside Life, Tribes, Vibes and Scribes, Positivity and 100° and Rising helped define their place in the 1990s UK jazz-funk scene, while tracks like Always There, Don’t You Worry ’bout a Thing and Still a Friend of Mine became signature moments.

What makes Incognito special is the feeling of community inside the music. Across changing lineups and decades of recordings, the sound remains warm, uplifting and deeply connected to groove.

Incognito remain one of the great modern jazz-funk collectives — a band whose music carries soul, sophistication and the unmistakable energy of London’s acid jazz scene.

"It introduced countless listeners to Pat Metheny's music"

By 1982, Pat Metheny had already established himself as one of the leading voices in contemporary jazz guitar. But for the Pat Metheny Group's fourth album, Offramp, he deliberately pushed into new territory.

Rather than trying to make a guitar synthesizer sound like a conventional guitar, Metheny used the new Roland GR-300 to imitate the phrasing and sustained lines of a horn. Alongside the addition of Brazilian percussionist and vocalist Naná Vasconcelos, it helped create a sound unlike almost anything else in jazz at the time.

The centrepiece of the album was "Are You Going With Me?"—an eight-minute composition built around Metheny's soaring guitar synthesizer and Lyle Mays' distinctive synthesizer textures.

Despite its length and unhurried pace, the piece became one of the Pat Metheny Group's best-known recordings and introduced countless listeners to the band's music.

Offramp won the 1983 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance, confirming that the group's new direction had struck a chord with audiences and critics alike.

Metheny has often explained that he never wanted the guitar synthesizer to sound like a conventional guitar. Instead, he was chasing the phrasing and expressiveness of a horn player.

More than forty years later, "Are You Going With Me?" remains one of the defining recordings of his career—and one of the clearest examples of a musician using new technology not to imitate an existing instrument, but to create an entirely new musical voice.
