A Nanyang Qipao, Designed for the Tropics

Look closely at the collar.

Adapted from the traditional mandarin collar, it rises high at the back before gently sloping into a low neckline at the front — retaining its Chinese lineage while allowing greater ease and comfort in the tropics.

Cut in fine linen in deep Inkstone Blue, the fabric has been reinforced to hold its clean, sculpted silhouette while remaining light and breathable.

Across the bodice, colourful fishes swim in harmony — first drawn by hand, then translated into embroidery by Korean artisans, bringing another layer of cross-cultural craft to the piece.

Comes in a top as well, Swimming in Colour, which has a striking fuchsia accent in our signature two-tone collar.

A Man of Deep Affection | 重情之人

The Contemporary Nanyang Gentleman is defined not simply by accomplishment, but by character — gratitude, loyalty, affection and the ability to remember those who walked beside him.
 We had known of pianist Wang Congyu through his music and story before meeting him in person at his concert earlier this year. It was only as we came to know him that we began to see the man
beyond the performer.

The story of the Orchid Suit therefore extends beyond him to his biggest supporter in life. A complementary qipao was created for his wife, carrying embroidery of a bird singing for joy amidst tropical
blooms and orchids — two garments distinct in character, yet harmoniously in sync, and connected through a shared visual language.

When Congyu later visited our Nanyang Fashion Gallery — once with a close friend, and later with his mother — we saw again this softer side of him: a man who holds close the people who have journeyed
alongside him

Perhaps the true measure of a gentleman is not how he appears in public, but who he is in private — in how he treats people, and what and whom he holds dear.

Blooming on the World Stage.
Created in Singapore, worn in South Africa.

For Singapore’s 61st National Day reception in Pretoria, the Orchid Suit took its place not on a runway, but where it was meant to be — on an international pianist Congyu Wang 王聪瑀 performing for his country.

Against a deep inkstone blue, Singapore orchids bloom across his back — a quiet piece of home carried onto an international stage.

It was especially meaningful to know familiar faces from Singapore were there too, including Kennie Ting, former Director of the Asian Civilisations Museum and Peranakan Museum, sharing in the occasion.

From perseverance in obscurity to flourishing on the world stage.

The Contemporary Nanyang Gentleman

Orchid as metaphor | 兰喻君子

“芝兰生于幽谷，不以无人而不芳； 君子修道立德，不以穷困而变节。”

The orchid grows fragrant even in a secluded valley, whether or not anyone is there to appreciate it. A gentleman cultivates his character and principles, remaining steadfast even through adversity.

For centuries, the orchid has embodied the qualities of the gentleman in Chinese culture.

When we learnt of the hardships Congyu Wang 王聪瑀 endured in his younger years — and how he continued to persevere in his music — the metaphor felt particularly apt.

For his bespoke suit, we gave this ancient idea a Nanyang expression: Singapore orchids blooming quietly across his back.

Not merely a symbol of Singapore, but of a man who continued to flourish through adversity.

A quiet dialogue between Korean craftsmanship and our Nanyang design language.

The Poetry of Form exhibition celebrates twenty years of Nanyang fashion, and it is also an opportunity to revisit our archives.

Originally designed in 2009 under the mentorship of fashion maestro Thomas Wee, this signature skirt with a mandarin knot returns with side fabric panels inspired by Najeonchilgi (나전칠기), Korea’s mother-of-pearl lacquerware.

Rendered in timeless Moss Green, it pairs effortlessly with our Mandarin collar lace top, or equally well with your favourite everyday tee or shirt.
