It looked like a game. But there was much more happening around the table.

Through a series of board game sessions for primary school students, participants were given opportunities to develop skills and dispositions through purposeful play and experiential learning.

🎯 Think critically — recognise patterns, evaluate options and anticipate outcomes.
💡 Solve problems — test ideas, learn from setbacks and adapt strategies.
🤝 Collaborate — communicate ideas, listen to others and make decisions together.
🧠 Take ownership — make choices, reflect on outcomes and try again.

The games provided an engaging environment where students could learn by doing, applying thinking and social skills in meaningful situations rather than simply being taught about them.

This is the value of play-based learning: when students are engaged, they are more willing to explore, experiment, collaborate and learn from experience.

For schools looking to complement classroom learning with meaningful, student-centred experiences, board games can be more than just recreation.
