Carl Sagan’s Eerie Prediction: How Accurate Is It Today?
In his 1995 book The Demon-Haunted World, Carl Sagan shared a grim vision of America’s future. He foresaw a time when the U.S. would rely heavily on a service and information economy, with manufacturing outsourced to other countries. He warned of the concentration of technological power in the hands of a few, alongside a public unable to understand or challenge critical issues.
Sagan also feared a decline in critical thinking, where superstition and pseudoscience might replace rational inquiry. Looking at today’s world, elements of his prediction seem strikingly accurate. From misinformation spreading online to the public’s reliance on tech controlled by a small number of companies, his insights feel more relevant than ever.
