Autumn brings changing temperatures, indoor heating and unstable humidity.

A classical guitar is built from thin pieces of wood that naturally react to the surrounding air. Excessively dry conditions can contribute to fret movement, buzzing, open seams and cracks. Excessive humidity can cause swelling, higher action and changes in responsiveness.

A small digital hygrometer is one of the simplest ways to protect your instrument. Aim for stable conditions of approximately 45–55% relative humidity and avoid sudden changes.

Do you currently monitor the humidity around your guitar?

Last week, Slovenian guitarist Uroš Rakovec visited Guitar Salon Vadya to test and compare guitars for his students.

Choosing the right instrument is about more than specifications. Playing comfort, response, balance, tonal character and the individual needs of the guitarist all matter.

Why do guitars made from different woods have different musical personalities?

The soundboard, back and sides all contribute to the result—but wood is only one part of the instrument. Construction, bracing, thickness, setup and the individual maker’s approach are equally important.

Spruce is often associated with clarity and dynamic headroom, while cedar frequently offers a more immediate response and warm tonal colour. These are useful starting points, not fixed rules.

The instrument must ultimately be judged as a complete musical voice.

Which do you generally prefer: spruce or cedar?
