⚜️ MASTERPIECE OWNERS ⚜️

🖼️ Salvator Mundi (Latin for ‘Savior of the World’) is a painting attributed either wholly or partially to the Italian High Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, dated around 1499–1510.

🧝‍♂️ The painting portrays Jesus Christ in a blue Renaissance robe, making the sign of the cross with his right hand while holding a transparent, non-refracting crystal orb in his left. This signifies his role as Salvator Mundi and represents the ‘celestial sphere’ of the heavens.

💰 On November 15, 2017, the painting was sold at auction by Christie’s in New York for $450.3 million to Prince Badr bin Abdullah Al Saud, setting a new record for the highest price ever paid for a painting at a public auction.

📜 Allegedly, Prince Badr made the purchase on behalf of Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism. However, it was later reported that he was acting as a proxy for his close ally, Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

ℹ️ The most famous paintings, especially old master works done before 1803, are generally owned or held at museums, for viewing by patrons. Since the museums rarely sell them, they are considered priceless. However, some works of art still end up in private collections.

⚜️🖼 The Shot Marilyns is a work of art produced in 1964 by Andy Warhol. It consists of four canvases, each a square measuring 40 inches and each consisting of a painting of Marilyn Monroe, each shot through in the forehead by a single bullet.

Warhol actually painted five colored Marilyns in 1964 with different colored backgrounds: red, orange, light blue, sage blue, and turquoise. He stored them at The Factory, his studio on East 47th Street in Manhattan.

Dorothy Podber (1932–2008), a friend of Factory photographer Billy Name, saw the recently completed paintings stacked against one another at the studio and asked Warhol if she could shoot them. Believing that she meant she wanted to photograph the paintings, Warhol agreed.

Podber doffed her pair of black gloves, withdrew a small revolver from her purse, and fired a shot into the stack of four “Marilyn” paintings, which became known as The Shot Marilyns. The fifth painting with the turquoise background was not in the stack.

➡️ The Blue was purchased by Peter Brant for $5,000 in 1967.

➡️ The Red was bought by Philip Niarchos for $4.1 million.

➡️ The Orange was bought for $17.3 million in 1998 then sold to Kenneth C. Griffin for a rumored $200+ million.

➡️ The Turquoise was bought by Steve Cohen (businessman) for a rumored $80 million.

💎➡️ Sage Blue was auctioned in May, 2022 for $195 million.
