Authorities in Panyijiar County, Unity State, have reported the tragic killing of more than 40 traders whose boat was ambushed on Friday night while crossing from Taiyar Port. The attack occurred in Chambek, located in Lakes State.

“I have confirmed from a reliable source that out of the 42 people killed, 39 were from Panyijiar County and 3 from Leer County. The names of the victims are yet to be confirmed,” the Panyijiar County Commissioner’s office stated.

As of now, the Lakes State government has not officially responded to the incident.

This massacre follows heightened tensions and allegations of cattle raiding between communities in Panyijiar and Lakes State. Just a week earlier, the conflict reportedly led to aerial bombardments carried out by the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) with alleged support from Ugandan allies.
