Tunisia ranks among the most water-stressed countries in the Mediterranean. According to the FAO's 2050 Water Vision strategy, climate change is intensifying a crisis already felt every day in the agricultural heartlands of the north-west — Béja and Jendouba.
🏜️ Rainfall is declining, groundwater levels are dropping, traditional harvests are growing more unpredictable. For those who depend on farming, this is not a statistic — it is next season's crop that never comes.
👩🌾 Rural women bear the heaviest burden. Cultural and regulatory barriers exclude them from water governance and resource management. They work the land, yet have no say in how it is irrigated.
💧 Hydroponics offers a tangible answer: growing food with 90% less water than conventional farming, with no reliance on soil quality. A technique that needs little space and can produce yields year-round.
🌱 SHE-GROWS — Sustainable Hydroponic Education for Growing Rural Opportunities — is an Erasmus+ Capacity Building project bringing these skills where they are needed most: into the hands of women in Béja and Jendouba. Technical training, cooperative enterprise, economic independence.
