The reason you use aquarium water instead of tap water is simply because your filtration system develops something called “beneficial bacteria” which is fundamental for a balanced ecosystem.

Beneficial Bacteria accumulates over time and break down organic debris (fish waste, dead plants, etc) and keep the water crystal clear. Beneficial Bacteria goes as far as breaking down toxic substances like ammonia and nitrates which are harmful toward your fishes.
•
Now that we understand what beneficial bacteria is, why use aquarium water instead of tap water?
We avoid using tap water because our beneficial bacteria has already acclimated to the aquarium water, therefore they’d remain alive when washing your filter media. However, if you use tap water, the beneficial bacteria you worked so hard on colonizing will die and then the process will have to start over.
