The hand-carved Ashanti Stool is a replica of the Golden Stool which is the symbol of the independence of the Ashanti kingdom.
In Africa, the stool represents status, power and the succession of chiefs and kings. Asante (or Ashanti) stools are carved from a single block of native hardwood and traditionally have crescent-shaped seats, flat bases and complex support structures, which exist in many designs with symbolic meanings.
Two popular motifs that decorate the Ashanti stool are the 'Gye Nyame' which translates to "Fear none but God" and the Sankofa Bird bearing the meaning "Reach back and examine your past so that you may ensure your future".
The motifs, carved on both sides of the stool, denote unity of mind and family and is a reflection of the deeply religious character of the Ghanaian people and remains a potent symbol of their independence of spirit. The artist may also depict on the stool, scenes from African village and tribal life.
