Blessed Good Morning my fellow farmers 🙏, recently we have been experiencing some rather erratic weather conditions whereby the excessive heat and high temperatures are affecting many a farmers crops. Yesterday however, we were thankful 🙏 for the rain 🌧 that came but experience tells us that sudden or heavy rainfall can do more harm than good.
Water management is crucial in agriculture as literally no crops can be produced without it, a good method of conserving water is through Irrigation systems. These include-Drip Irrigation, Sprinkler Irrigation, there are several others however the two mentioned are widely used by farmers in this country.
Before attempting to use any mentioned method of Irrigation one should consider the following
1. The Initial Cost $$$
Pumps, timers, pipes,fittings, hose[Dripline]can require some serious capital to start, don't compromise on Quality but rather start with a manageable space. Also plant higher value crops and expand as you capital increases.
2. Water Source 💧
You simply can't grow crops without water, secure your water 1st. Before inital designs check your crop requirements, consider dams, rivers, local supply, storage tanks and reservoirs that will provide enough water throughout your planting cycles.
3. Power.
Ensure you have a reliable source of power, i.e T&Tec, ⛽️ gas powered pumps can increase production costs,depending on farm location and water usage solar may be an option .
4. Knowledge.
I often say to up and coming farmers "Agriculture is Scientific ", if you don't have the knowledge even a properly designed system can fail. Proper design an basic operator training matter.
5. Maintenance.
Many Hydroponics systems along with open field applications in Trinidad 🇹🇹 and Tobago often fail due to lack of maintenance, good filtration, regular flushing and routine inspection can prevent small problems from becoming expensive failures.
