1935 TRINIDAD & TOBAGO $1 “MAP NOTE” – FRACTIONAL SERIAL
An exceptional example of one of Trinidad & Tobago’s most recognizable early banknotes. Issued 1st September 1935, this $1 represents the first date of issue of the celebrated 1935–1949 “Map Note” series and is catalogued as Pick 5a.
What makes this example particularly special is its C/10 fractional serial prefix. These early fractional-prefix notes are considerably more difficult to encounter, adding another important element of scarcity to an already elusive issue. Combined with its impressive state of preservation, this is the type of example that becomes increasingly difficult to locate as collectors move beyond the commonly encountered circulated grades. Examples above VF20 are particularly challenging finds, especially with strong, original paper quality.
Printed by Thomas De La Rue, London, the note showcases the extraordinary artistry of the series: a sailing ship approaching Trinidad’s mountainous coastline and harbour at left, contrasted by the palm lined Tobago landscape and sailing vessel at right.
A vibrant multicolour underprint sits beneath the intricate blue engraving, while the reverse displays the colonial Coat of Arms surrounded by elaborate guilloché work.
Most importantly, this example has received PMG’s Exceptional Paper Quality (EPQ) designation, confirming the originality of its paper. The combination of the first 1935 issue, fractional serial prefix, higher collectible grade and EPQ designation makes this an especially difficult configuration to acquire.
A beautiful survivor from the beginning of Trinidad & Tobago’s iconic Map Note series and an important piece for the advanced collector of Trinidad & Tobago and British Caribbean currency.
