Provence times - Gordes, a la Bastide

Charming romantic Bastide, lovely dinner and an equally charming Vermentino (or Rolle as it’s called in Provence).

The Clos Saint Vincent Cuvee Vino di Gio is from the oldest vines, biodynamically farmed and barrel aged.
Most of the times Vermentino / Rolle is made in steel tanks and hence a crisp zesty wine but here with a 2015 vintage we have a bit of both, freshness and elegance at the same time.

The domaine has the monopole of the Bellet AOC just west of Nice City.

No surprise the wine paired beautifully with the Provencal dinner, although towards the end we felt better keep a glass for the sommelier as it’s quite rich and have enough concentration for a chess game thereafter…😀

The smallest domaine from Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

This infant born in 2020 has been grown on 0.5ha and has 787 siblings plus 48 magnums.

100% Grenache like Rayas, it’s already very approachable.
I usually like CDP with at least 15-20 years age, depending the vintages of course.

There is no “jam” in here, good fruit, balanced and with a good long future ahead.

Full moon times in Dogliani vecchia citta (Piedmont times).

Paired this with a beautiful Tajarin (egg pasta) con salsiccia e piselli (peas) followed by an amazing veal tagliata.

2011 wasn’t the very best vintage for Baroli but they do offer great drinkability now and this one was no exception.
Nebbiolo typical aromas of rose, cranberry and menthol which I can’t get enough of…
Round and balanced, although a medium long finishing, this and the lovely food made our day.

Had this bottle at what I was told is Piedmont’s most spectacular cellar.

It certainly is impressive with many large formats and pretty much everything from Piedmont but unlike many other restaurants in the region, the top wines here are as expensive as in Hong Kong, so we choose a more reasonably priced Sandrone 2011 from the Cannubi Boschis vineyards.
It took longer to open than the one from the previous night and it never really was singing. I would probably go for older Sandrone Baroli from the greatest vintages.
1996, 1989 are two recent examples of Sandrone Cannubi that were singing.

Also sommelier was substandard in this Michelin star restaurant, from glassware handling to advice.

Venice is magic especially at night when the day time tourists are gone ..

Venissa in Burano, 30 minutes boat from Venice is a wonderful boutique resort, gastronomic restaurant, osteria and winery.

Venissa Bianco is the only wine made from Duranda, an indigenous grape variety revived 14 years ago and it’s saltiness yet refreshing pairs super well with the seafood and veggies that swims or grows nearby.

Gold plated handmade bottles…

A great experience.

Fantastic wines at Weingut Michael Broger - so hard to get, everything sold out but we are happy to have put our hands on a few cases of these “Blauburgunder Alte Reben” 2020.

Incredible freshness, roundness and beautiful aromas, all made naturally and biodynamic principles.

Michael told me his land is nothing special, south facing old vines but not much of interest otherwise, incredible what he made out of it.

The closest I had was a Prieure-Roch Les Corvées.

All his Wines are elegant, balanced and lively, as is Michael, the owner / winemaker.

The bottle is empty now and I call for a second one.

A happy moment with Corton, Richebourg and Champagne.

Solessence extra-brut was on the lighter refreshing side perfect as an aperitif.

The Corton Renardes, still in its youth, showed beautiful aromas and this fruit driven beauty paired well with the grilled fish with galangal (yes a ginger family sauce), very surprising.

The richer, earthier older Richebourg
was a delight, the beef was too fatty though. A pity that there is no Charolais or Simmental available here in Taiwan.
