Last month, we slowed down with Clary Sage. Its warm, herbal sweetness. Its gentle invitation to wind down. This month, we lift things up. Brighter. Lemony. A little buzzy, in the best way.
Welcome to our Oil of the Month: ✨ MELISSA ✨
🧪 Why the Species Matters
Melissa (Melissa officinalis) belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae), making it a botanical cousin of lavender and peppermint. Yet it has a unique character all its own.
True Melissa essential oil is one of the rarest and most expensive oils in the world. The plant typically yields only 0.01–0.05% essential oil, depending on growing conditions and harvest timing. In practical terms, it may take between 3 and 8 tonnes of fresh herb to produce just 1 kg of essential oil.
Because true Melissa oil is so rare and precious, authenticity matters. To ensure you are getting genuine Melissa essential oil, purchase from trusted suppliers who can provide information about sourcing and quality assurance.
🐝 An Ancient Legacy
The name "Melissa" comes from the Greek word for "honeybee." Bees are strongly attracted to its delicate white flowers, and the plant has been cultivated near beehives for centuries.
In Greek mythology, Melissa was a nymph associated with bees and honey, and later traditions credit her with teaching humans the use of honey.
The Romans introduced Melissa to Northern Europe, where it became valued as a calming herb. In 17th-century Paris, Carmelite monks created the famous Carmelite Water (Eau de Mélisse des Carmes), a traditional herbal tonic and one of the earliest aromatic waters.
🌿 A Precious Plant
Melissa is a hardy perennial native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Central Asia. While the plant itself grows readily, extracting its essential oil is a delicate and labor-intensive process. Steam distillation of the flowering tops and leaves yields a precious oil with a bright, lemony, herbaceous aroma.
Today, some of the world's finest Melissa essential oil is produced in Bulgaria, France, and Germany.
Stay with us this month as we explore the scent, science, and soul of this remarkable plant. 🌿
