Under the occupation regime that prevailed in Kyiv, every football player had to get a job in order to survive, first of all, and not be accused of sabotage. Short worked as a cook in the dining room, Putistin got a job there as a master. Vasily Sukharev worked on the railway. Chernega went to work in the protection of the City Law, Gundarev, Golimbievsky, Alexander Tkachenko and Georgy Timofeev joined the police. The director of the Kyiv bakery, Josef Kordyk, a Czech prisoner of war of the former Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War, took care of the sport out of personal commitment. It was he who gave work at the bakery № 1 to famous pre-war Ukrainian athletes: boxers Trofimov, Turovtsev, Chervinsky, gymnasts Ganin, Eme, Shinkarenko, swimmers Mykhaylenko, Salopin worked here. He also invited footballer M. Trusevych to work here, followed by seven other Dynamo players: Sviridovsky, Kuzmenko, Klymenko, Makar Goncharenko, Putistin, Tyutchev, Komarov and Volodymyr Balakin, who played for Lokomotiv before the war.

At Kordyk's initiative, a team was formed from them. In addition to these first football players, later Dynamo players Melnyk, Gundarev, Korotkykh, Chernega, Timofeev and Vasyl Sukharev, who played for Lokomotiv before the war, started playing for the bakery team. The team turned out to be quite experienced and old. The youngest (Melnyk) was 27 years old, and the oldest (Tyutchev) was 35.

On June 22, 1941, Germany attacked the USSR. With the start of the war, most players were drafted into the Red Army, the People's Militia and fighter battalions. On July 1, the evacuation from Kyiv began. But the Dynamo players who were subject to conscription remained in the city. The coach of the team Mykhailo Butusov and the former captain of the team Konstantin Shchegotsky tried to persuade the head of the Kyiv NKVD Lev Varnavsky (real name Vornovitsky) to send not only newcomers from Western Ukraine, but also all other members of the team. Varnavsky saw this as cowardice and refused to help with the evacuation.

During the initial period of the war, the German command released Ukrainians from captivity. Thus, Mykhailo Sviridovsky, Fedir Tyutchev, Mykhailo Putistin, Mykola Korotkykh, Mykola Holimbievsky, Lev Gundarev, Ivan Kuzmenko, Oleksiy Klymenko, Pavlo Komarov, Yuriy Chernega, Oleksandr Tkachenko and Mykhailo Melnyk returned from captivity. In addition, at the beginning of the war, Mykola Trusevych enlisted in the People's Militia, fought as a battalion spy, but was wounded and could not get out of the encirclement, so he also returned to occupied Kyiv.

On September 14, 1929, Dynamo played its first international match against the Lower Austrian workers' team Deutsch Wagram, losing 3: 4. In 1935, Dynamo's Ukrainian national team traveled to France and Belgium, where they defeated the four-time French Red Star winner 6-1 in a friendly game. Until 1936, the only championship of the Soviet Union was not held. Kievans gained experience in games for the championship of the sports society "Dynamo". There they won over Dynamo from Odessa and Kharkiv. The Kyiv team was clearly the strongest in the Ukrainian SSR, but it has not yet reached the level of skill of Moscow's Dynamo. For example, in the final of the Dynamo championship in 1933, the Muscovites defeated Kyiv with a score of 2: 1.

In 1936, the USSR decided to create a single team championship instead of a large number of different multi-level tournaments. The strongest team of the Ukrainian SSR at that time was Dynamo (Kyiv). The debut in the championship took place in Kiev on May 24, 1936, when the Moscow "Dynamo" defeated the hosts with a score of 5: 1. The only goal of striker Mykola Makhina was the first goal for the Ukrainian club in the championships of the Soviet Union. After that, Dynamo (Kyiv) tried to catch up with the Muscovites, but failed. The only Ukrainian team in the single-round debut championship of the USSR finished the tournament in second place. Local fans perceived this performance as an unconditional success

After Ukraine gained independence, the authorities ordered to take as a basis the Ukrainian names of all proper names when they are transmitted "by means of the English language" [35], despite the established traditions of this language [36]. This affected, in particular, the English name of Kiev: as a result, the word Kyiv appeared, which, however, is unusual for English speakers [37] and therefore is used by them less often than Kiev [38]. At the same time, in August 2012, the UN Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names decided to change the official rule for spelling the name of the Ukrainian capital from Kiev to Kyiv [39] [40]. In June 2019, the US Geographic Names Council, which is based on many international organizations (in particular, IATA [41]), made a similar decision [42] [43]. In July 2019, the Latin version of the name of Kiev was also changed in UNESCO documents

In Slavic languages, the second vowel in the name of this city varies significantly, which in some cases is due to the peculiarities of the formation of the adjective on behalf of Kyi. For example, in Russian the city is called Kiev, in Polish - Kijów ([ˈkijuf], Kiyuf, but Polish w Kijowie, in Kiev), in Serbian - Kiev, Croatian - Kijev, Bulgarian - Kiev, etc. while it was part of the Russian Empire and the USSR, the name of the city was acquired in non-Slavic languages through Russian: English Kiev (also Kieff in the middle of the 19th century [33] [34]), German Kiew, etc.

Metropolitan Hilarion in his "Word on Law and Grace" compared Sophia of Kiev with the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. Also in the "Tale of Bygone Years" Yaroslav the Wise, when describing the construction of St. Sophia, was compared with King Solomon. This has been interpreted by many researchers as likening Kiev to the New Jerusalem. As it was with Constantinople [19] [20] [21] [22]. According to BA Uspensky, this is evident from the relationship of St. Sofia, the cities of Kiev and Constantinople with the Temple of Wisdom in Jerusalem, as well as the Golden Gate in three cities [23]. As IN Danilevsky writes, already in the XI-XII centuries there was an idea in Russia that Kiev was the New Jerusalem [24]. Sverdlov MB did not agree with this concept. He believed that the construction of churches of St. Sofia, St. Irina and St. George, as well as their Byzantine architecture, the Golden Gate - all this goes back to the tradition of Constantinople, but not to Jerusalem

The Byzantine emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus, writing in the middle of the 10th century, noted that Kiev had a second name - Samvatas. Probably, it was either the ancient name of the city, or its designation in a non-Slavic environment. The word, possibly, comes from the Khazar language, and in this case it can mean "upper fortifications".

In the "Tale of Bygone Years" Kiev in the mouth of Prince Oleg the Prophet under 882 is called the Mother of Russian cities ("mother of the Russian city"). This is understood as a tracing paper from the Greek "metropolis" ("meter" mother + "polis" city) [15] [16]. This expression implies that Kiev was the capital and all ancient Russian cities originated from it [17]. The same idiom is found in ancient Russian literature and in the future - for example, in the Praise of Constantine of Murom of the 16th century, "together with the Christian Church, cry out to God for the city of God-saved Kiev."
