Modern Hollywood "KTTV" in 1996 moved from its former home on Metromedia Square in block 5700 on Sunset Boulevard on Bundy Dry in western Los Angeles. KABC-TV moved from its office to the ABC Television Center (now The Prospect Studios) in southern Hollywood to Glendale in 2000, although the Los Angeles office of ABC News is still located on Prospect. After being bought by 20th Century Fox in 2001, KCOP left its old house in block 900 on La Bre Avenue to join KTTV in Fox. The KCBS-TV duo of KCAL-TV, owned by CBS, has moved from its CBS Columbia residence, block 6100 on Sunset Boulevard, to a new building at CBS Studio Center in Studio City. KTLA, located at block 5800 on Sunset Boulevard, and KCET, located at block 4400 on Sunset Boulevard, is the last company to broadcast (television or radio) with a Hollywood address.

While filmmaking is still concentrated in the Hollywood area, most studios have been in the Los Angeles area. Paramount Pictures is the only major studio that is still physically located in Hollywood. Other studios in the area are "Jim Henson" (formerly "Chaplin") - "Sunset Gower Studios" and "Raleigh Studios"

The name Hollywood was introduced by Hobard Johnstone Whitley, the father of Hollywood. He and his wife came across the name during their honeymoon in 1886, according to Margaret Virginia Whitley's memoirs. The name "Hollywood" was used by GG Wilcox when he marked his 160-acre farm in 1887. He borrowed the name from his neighbor Ivar Wade and wanted to be the first to register it. By 1900, the then community of Kahuyeng had a post office, a newspaper, a hotel, and two markets, with a population of 500. Los Angeles, with a population of 100,000 at the time, was located 16 km east due to citrus plantations. One track for the tram was laid down Prospect Avenue, but the trams did not run often and the ride took two hours.
