Okay, honestly, I didn’t read any of them, though they look very nice and are already on my list. There are many more of course, let me add just one I think is a key piece of the history of modern physics, i.e. the physics responsible of almost everything what any of you, dear readers, can see around you… the story of the great physics cooked during the convulse XX century, from the perspective of a semi-autistic character and yet an essential protagonist of the history:

SURPRISE!

Guess what? NARS just did a traditionally summery summer collection.

Wha!?

Yup, NARS has been all about artsy, edgy non-summery summer collections for a few years (last year’s looked more like a fall or holiday release to me), but the Summer 2019 collection is the most summery collection I’ve seen from them in a really long time.

Technically, the “Summer 2019” collection is one a few summer season NARS collections, and it’s the one actually called Summer. The items are all limited edition and available now on the NARS website. There are two $59 face palettes, each with four eyeshadows, one highlighter and a bronzer; four new $27 Satin Lip Pencils; and four new $27 Velvet Matte Lip Pencils.

First impressions…

The eyeshadows: Sumptuously silken, they feel softer than satin sheets. These are powders, but they could almost pass for creams. They’re the closest things I’ve found to Chantecaille’s awesome Mermaid Matte Cream Shadows, which practically meld into lids and blend crazy well. I can’t even tell where these shadows begin and end.

The highlighter and bronzer: Also powders, and also creamy like the eyeshadows.

FYI, IMO, applying mascara is a perishable skill.

It is NOT like riding a bike, where once your brain makes the connections and you “get it,” you never forget it. No, if you don’t use your mascara application skills, you lose ’em, man.

Yet another thing I’ve learned this month…

I was reminded of this valuable life lesson yesterday because I wore a considerable amount of makeup in public for the first time in weeks, which I did because I met a friend at Panera down the street for lunch, and then ran a few errands afterward.

I did foundation, concealer, brows, cream blush and cream eyeshadow, and then came the mascara.

Sigh… The mascara.

I don’t know where I took a wrong turn, but somewhere along the way it did. (It may have been at the fifth or sixth coat.)

There was also a completely useless lash comb up in the mix, which, instead of separating my lashes, gathered them together into large spikes, and then those spikes somehow combined into one massive mega spike.

I looked like an anime character gone so, so wrong…

Unfortunately in my town we expect ’partly cloudy’ in the morning, though you can always get a privileged view through Internet (e.g. here, here or here in Spanish from Faroe Islands).

Hello, friend! Happy December Caturday ❄️🎄🐱 to ya.

You know, just when I think I’ve seen it all among the pantheon of makeup tips and now it’s just the same bevy of basic tips recycled and repackaged for the quadrillionth time and I stop expecting to ever see anybody ever add anything new to the beauty news cycle, ever, I stumble upon something I’ve never tried before, and sometimes it rocks my world.

Two words: reverse foundation.

It’s a new (I think) base technique, and I gave it a try for the first time the other day. It’s where you start by applying cream products to your skin first while it’s bare (contour, if you wear it, blush and then highlighter), let them set, and then do a sheer foundation on top.

Girl, it is game-changing.

Blowing my mind right now

The idea is that by layering the foundation on top of the contour/blush/highlighter products, everything blends together so seamlessly and naturally that it looks like you’re wearing the perfect amount of makeup. I tried it and took pics the other day, and I think the subtlety of the effect gets a little lost in photographs, but it looks really, really good in real life, especially outdoors in full sun.

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. Blowout…but only if someone else does it for me!

2. Have you ever tried doing soap brows?

No, but I really, really want to! I keep meaning to get a bar of glycerine soap whenever I go to Target, but I keep forgetting. I love the brushed-up brow look.

3. Coldest place you’ve ever visited?

Um…Lake Tahoe? In general, I try to stay away from the cold because I’m a weather wimp.

4. Have you ever grown out your armpit hair?

Nope! I don’t think I’ve ever seen my ‘pits in their natural state. I started shaving them right when I started growing body hair.

New Horizons’ Last Portrait of Pluto’s Puzzling Spots

There is something mystical in this capture.

The spots appear on the side of Pluto that always faces its largest moon, Charon—the face that will be invisible to New Horizons when the spacecraft makes its close flyby the morning of July 14. New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern of the Southwest Research Institute, Boulder, Colorado, describes this image as “the last, best look that anyone will have of Pluto’s far side for decades to come.”

OK, now…I’m going to start doing something that may sound kinda cray to my fellow lovers of lotions and other beauty products, a.k.a. MY PEOPLE, but I don’t think I’m going to keep beauty backups around anymore.

Wait, wait! — I mean, I’ll have to make a few exceptions, like for the skin care I’ve used daily since the last Ice Age, like Kate Somerville Anti-Bac and my Clarins cream, but I don’t really think I need to keep that many other extras in the house. Most of them just sit around taking up wasted space and money.

Granted, it feels good to always be prepared in the event of a skin care or makeup emergency (they happen), especially for products I trust and love, but one thing I’ve learned about beauty products is that there’s always usually something comparable out there that’s probably as good as if not better. Newer technology, new colors, new formulas — there’s almost always an alternative out there somewhere, and I don’t know why this didn’t occur to me sooner (it probably did, but I forgot), but my preferences are also constantly changing. What I love today, I might not love (or need) tomorrow.

Question for you… How do you feel about formula dressing?

LOL! Pardon me for a moment, but I had to laugh there, because “formula dressing”? Sounds like something you put on a salad.

But I digress…

If you’ve flipped through the pages of a fashion magazine in the past decade, you may have read talk of having an “outfit formula,” something you can always turn to when you want to look sharp. Maybe it’s a white t-shirt, high-waisted jeans and a black blazer, or maybe it’s something else.

Once you figure out a formula that works for you, then you can tweak it ever-so-slightly (perhaps by replacing the black blazer with a black motorcycle jacket), but essentially, you go back to the same formula over and over because it works.

I’m a HUGE fan of translating this idea for the realm of makeup, and I do “makeup formulas” all the time.

I’m wearing one of mine in these pics — cat eye flicks and bright lips.

It’s quick and easy and gives you a lot of bang for your makeup buck, IMO. Also, crucially, it doesn’t make me think too hard, and I’m not reinventing any wheels, because I know that both of the main elements in the look work for me.

Chinese scientists genetically modify human embryos

Rumours of germline modification prove true — and look set to reignite an ethical debate.

Some say that gene editing in embryos could have a bright future because it could eradicate devastating genetic diseases before a baby is born. Others say that such work crosses an ethical line: researchers warned in Nature in March that because the genetic changes to embryos, known as germline modification, are heritable, they could have an unpredictable effect on future generations. Researchers have also expressed concerns that any gene-editing research on human embryos could be a slippery slope towards unsafe or unethical uses of the technique.
