Years before Choupette Lagerfeld’s reign at Chanel, Tabs was the fashion house’s most fabulous spokescat. His kitty modeling ad campaigns decorated subway tunnels, murals, cat condos and billboards across America and around the world.

Tabs dominated haute cat-ure catwalks for more than a decade and still holds the record for “Longest Feather Boa Worn by a Cat Model” at Milan, New York and Paris Fashion Week.

Here were some of his most iconic Chanel campaigns, many of which are studied by kittens in fashion schools to this day.

Light Printing

We are exploring new modalities of creative photography through robotics and long-exposure photography. Using a robotic arm, a light source is carried through precise movements in front of a camera. Photographic compositions are recorded as images of volumetric light. Robotic light “painting” can also be inverted: the camera is moved via the arm to create an image “painted” with environmental light. Finally, adding real-time sensor input to the moving arm and programming it to explore the physical space around objects can reveal immaterial fields like radio waves, magnetic fields, and heat flows.

1. Trader Joe’s Chili Lime Seasoning Blend

I usually don’t like spicy seasoning because I don’t like it when my tongue feels like it’s on fire or when I’m excessively drooling, but I’m totally down with this mix of chili powder, salt and lime, which has a little bit of heat to it (not so much that I can’t handle it). Apparently, it’s TJ’s take on something called Tajín?

Anyway, I love it. And I’ve been putting it on everything, including the Thai-inspired ground lime chicken I whipped up a few nights ago with chopped cucumber, pineapple and watermelon.

Seriously, this stuff makes even the most mediocre watermelon, of which I’ve had many this year (not a great year for 🍉), taste delish.

2. MAC Half ‘N Half Lipstick

This neutral creamy pink lives in the MAC permanent line, and it has MAC’s Amplified formula, so it’s moderately shiny and majorly pigmented.

3. Doing air squats with a medicine ball

OK…you put the ball under your butt, then lower yourself into a squat until your “cheeks” touch the ball before you rise back up again.

Why would any sane person do this, you might ask?

I’m always curious to hear what you’re into ’cause I’m a nosy noodle like that. Myself, I’m in a bronzed lid/nude lip phase, which I know is more of a summertime ensemble, and it’s midwinter and pouring buckets here, but I’m rolling with it. Might as well let it work its way through my system. 🙂

Before this, I went through a taupe eyeshadow phase, and before that I was all about warm reds and oranges.

How ’bout you? What kind of makeup looks are you into at the moment?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Yay for the Bay! In this series, for the month of February 2019, I’ll be featuring products from and around my stomping grounds, the San Francisco Bay Area.

My idea of the perfect party punch involves strawberries, and if they aren’t in there in copious amounts (mashed or sliced, doesn’t matter to me), I’m out. There’s a Strawberry version in the new-ish Benefit Punch Pops, so YAY for me and my red berry addiction, which I blame on a childhood spent obsessing over Strawberry Shortcake (the doll, not the dessert…although I do love both).

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why the boxes say “Liquid Lip Color,” when really, this new-ish line, which came out last fall, is made up of straight-up lipglosses.

*shrugs*

Slightly confusing marketing aside, the glosses are fun, functional and best of all, cute, which is what Benefit, a beauty brand based outta SF (my old stomping grounds!), does best.

This line of non-sticky, full-pigment glosses is supposed to be cheeky and fun and not meant to be taken too seriously. You stick one in your purse, wear it everyday for two weeks straight, and then after that, occasionally take it out whenever you do a deep dive into your bag (“Oh, so THAT’S where it went!”) and touch up with it before moving onto the next thing.

I’m actually surprised I didn’t walk out of Trader Joe’s with more than three boxes of this hand cream.

Not to say that I didn’t come close… But I didn’t have a basket. And I was only supposed to zip in and out before HIIT class. And I didn’t want to be late. So I didn’t really have time to carry a tall stack of them awkwardly across the store.

Now, if I’d had a few extra minutes and/or a basket, I would’ve totally been that person who walks up to the register with a box of these mini ice cream cones and an armful of hand cream. LOL.

I talked about this hand cream before, but long story short, it’s hella moisturizing, smells fantastic and only costs $4.99. It’s a bargain rose-scented dupe for L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream.

FYI, in the unlikely event that you’re in the Novato area tonight (and if so, hi!), there were only eight tubes remaining on the shelf at the TJ’s when I left.

I’m just sayin’.

If you get them, I’ll understand, but if you don’t…I’m calling dibs on at least two of them.

Earth’s inner structure could be revealed by the speed at which waves travel from one edge to another. (Planetary Visions Ltd./Science Photo Library)

Interesting stuff, read more in Nature: Long-awaited mathematics proof could help scan Earth’s innards.

The problem is called the boundary-rigidity conjecture. It belongs to the field of Riemannian geometry, the modern theory of curved spaces with any number of dimensions. Albert Einstein built his general theory of relativity — in which mass warps the geometry of space-time — on this branch of mathematics.

Even MOAR ideas!! On the off chance that you haven’t already heard, there’s a Sephora VIB sale this month! To give you some ideas, I’m highlighting some of my favorite makeup that you can find at Sephora this week.

I’ve been the proud, happy owner of this highlighting palette ever since the first time it came out in 2013, and I lurve it just as much today as I did five years ago.

The Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette is $62 at full price, a.k.a. HELLA EXPENSIVE, but the Sephora VIB discount kicks it down to $49.60, which is a teensy bit easier on the wallet.

Whenever someone near or above 30 asks me for a highlighter recommendation, this palette, along with MAC Hush, are the first two things that come to mind.

Why?

Well, each of the three face powders in the Ambient Lighting Palette has a lovely opalescent glow…

Hmm, let me rephrase that, because I don’t know if “opalescent” is quite the right term. Basically, I think the finish is unlike anything else out there. Opal, or pearl, would indicate some obvious shine, and the Ambient powders aren’t even close to shiny.

Since I started moonlighting as a professional (still novice!) cupcake baker last October, and have been working in the back of the house at a local bakery, I’ve been exploring ways to merge the wonderful worlds of cupcakes, and cookies, and cakes, and other kinds of baking…and also makeup.

For instance, there are ways in which cupcake and cookie baking are similar. Like, for instance, the basic process you go through to make cakes and cookies is the same. First, you pull together your dry ingredients and your wet ingredients, and then you alternate the wet the with dry.

It’s also the same things when I’m baking at for fun at home, with the biggest difference being that everything is scaled up to crazy high proportions at the bakery. Like, the other day, I baked 15 chocolate cake layers for a single day’s worth of orders! This is compared to at home, where I’ll maybe make three layers, at the most.

Working at the bakery has been really cool because I’ve been learning a lot, but I’m always kind of afraid that I’ll do something horribly wrong, like burn a big- batch of 600 sugar cookies…

Another difference between baking at home and baking at the bakery is how we perform prep tasks in piecemeal, and over the course of a few days.

In case you need to reach me, I’ll be at the Michaels in San Rafael, California, because apparently I live there now! 😂

What is it about craft items I technically don’t need but desperately want? — like this Golden Girls cross stitch kit?! Never you mind that I’ve never stitched a cross in my life (?), but I want it anyway.

I’m going again later today to get some frosting tips and bags so I can practice piping cupcakes this weekend. Maybe some more cookie cutters, too, if I find some cute ones.

How about you? What are you up to?

Do you have a few minutes? Because here are some stories that caught my eye this week…

Everything you ever needed to know about eyebrow extensions (yup, you read that correctly)

Aaaaaand in this week’s edition of “Celebs Releasing Beauty Brands,” pop singer Kesha has a colorful new vegan makeup line.

The ultimate starter kit for men 👨 who are interested in wearing makeup but don’t know where to start

Can you tell if your eye makeup is actually eye-safe?

Interesting, the mundane life of theoretical physicist in the more transversally rich environment in that field in the whole world: CERN

The Theory corridor welcomes hundreds of visitors each year, all of whom must be provided with offices. The strips of white paper stuck to this door act as name plates. There’s no need to reprint them each time: when someone moves into the office, their name is slipped into the space provided, and when they leave, it is removed and stuck back on the door.
