Until the late Pleistocene , about 10,000 years ago, lions were the most widely distributed large mammals on Earth after humans [5] . Their fossils have been found in most of Africa, in Eurasia from Western Europe to India and in North America from the Yukon to Peru [6] . Known from rock paintings, the European cave lion was apparently a subspecies of the modern lion.

In North and Northwest India, the lion was a common predator. However, human persecution and habitat destruction have led to the fact that in Africa the lion has survived only south of the Sahara, its range is now greatly reduced. Small in Asiaa population exists in the Gir Forest (in the Indian state of Gujarat ).

The historical range of the lion was much wider than the modern one: back in the Early Middle Ages , the lion was found throughout Africa , except for deserts and tropical forests, it could also be seen in the Middle East , Iran , and even in a number of places in southern Europe (for example, it lived on parts territory of the modern south of Russia , rising to about the 45th parallel north).

Along with the tiger , it is the largest of the living cats, the weight of some males can reach 250 kg [2] . It is difficult to say for certain whether the largest subspecies of the lion is more massive than the largest subspecies of the tiger
