Today in 1408 The Order of the Dragon was established by Sigismund von Luxembourg, King of Hungary. It was fashioned after the military orders of the Crusades, requiring its initiates to defend the cross and fight the enemies of Christianity, in particular the Ottoman Empire. The Order flourished during the first half of the 15th century, primarily in Germany and Italy. After Sigismund's death in 1437, its importance declined in Western Europe. However, after the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, it continued to play a role in Hungary, Croatia, Albania, Serbia and Romania which bore the brunt of the Ottoman incursions. The Prince of Wallachia Vlad II Dracul, father of Vlad the Impaler, took his name from the Order of the Dragon.

Today in 1676 happened Battle of Lund (Scanian War) between the invading Danish army and the army of Charles XI of Sweden. The Danish had an army of about 13,000 under the personal command of 31-year-old King Christian V of Denmark, aided by General Carl von Arensdorff. The Swedish army, which numbered about 8,000, was commanded by Field Marshal Simon Grundel-Helmfelt and the 21-year-old Swedish king Charles XI. It is one of the bloodiest battles in percent of casualties on both sides ever fought on European soil. The Swedish victory is often attributed to the composition of their army, as it contained far fewer mercenaries than the Danish army.
