White's Mill | Abingdon, Virginia

Long before grocery stores and highways, the steady sound of rushing water and grinding stones echoed across this Appalachian valley. For generations, families brought their corn and wheat to White’s Mill, trusting the waters of Toole Creek to help provide food for their tables.

Milling has taken place here since the late 1700s, making this one of the oldest mill sites in Southwest Virginia. More than a place of business, the mill became the heart of the community. Neighbors gathered here to exchange news, settle business, share stories, and catch up on the happenings of the day. In many ways, the mill was the social center of rural life.

Through wars, floods, changing times, and the passing of centuries, White’s Mill endured. Though it once stood silent and neglected, dedicated local volunteers worked tirelessly to save this historic landmark from being lost forever. Today, the old mill once again stands as a testament to the determination and resilience of the Appalachian people.

As the waters of Toole Creek continue to flow past its weathered walls, White’s Mill reminds us of a simpler time—when communities were built around hard work, self-reliance, and neighbors helping neighbors. It is more than an old building; it is a living piece of Appalachian heritage, still telling its story more than two centuries later. 🤍 You can visit Friday-Sundays and help support this wonderful piece of history.
