Yesterday was a nice day for a little vitamin D during this pandemic. A tidal river in the southern tip of the Pine Barrens is a great place to hang to be alone. Being 61 with no wind, how could I resist? Picked up 2 dozen blood worms, an ultra light rod and threw the old pond prowler on the back of my truck. My target for today were perch. This river is good for both yellow and white. Today, I only caught two yellow. But, I wasn’t at all disappointed. Ended up with over a dozen nice Pickerel. Picks on blood worms and #4 drop shot hooks? Who would have thunk! To boot, 6’9” light action drop shot rod and 2500 Stradic made every fish a blast to play and a smooth drag singing. In spite of the cool weather, the water temp was hovering around 49 degrees. The Picks were bunched up on the bottom of 5 to 6 ft. edge of the channel. If I didn’t target perch I probably wouldn’t have caught anything. For picks, I hang on the edges in deep water and cast into the shallows. Learned something new. The topper for this great day was the sunset. Time to kick up my feet and enjoy a good cigar and smooth bourbon.

With weather in the 70s, no wind and water temp a hair under 60 had me out and about. Bass were tuff to find and not in their usual spots. Bank fisherman were in a few of these and I respect them and give them distance because I have a whole river, lake or pond at hand. Hint hint. But the Pickerel are very active and slamming top water. As usual and unlike other fisherman I show a couple effective baits. One that was talked about before and still working is a chartreuse tail Culprit fish behind a floating bullet and a 4.3 swim bait rigged weedless on a EWG hook. If you have a fly rod and a weedless hair popper, you would think you died and went to heaven. Now I’m looking towards a cold front. Decisions decisions. 🤔

I guess it is obvious where one could find me on a beautiful day, like today, with absolutely no wind. Of course it would be spent in notorious Pickerel territory with light tackle. Started out with a Mepps on drops offs but found this small Rebel Pop-R was the ticket to putting a lot of large fish in the pond prowler fished in the shallow flats.

My happy place has been the Pine Barrens, as of late. Pickerel fishing mostly in Wharton State Forrest. No crowds, solitude and great scenery. Thought I venture to the southern tip of Wharton and try for monster river Pickerel in the tidal waters that starts somewhere around Camden and ends up in Great Bay and then the ocean. Great day, water like glass but just one small Pickerel. However, I got a surprise of my life. Ran into a school of hungry Bass. Really didn’t expect them in this neighborhood. I love adventures; especially, those that comes with a treasure.

I’ve been playing around with senko style worms with great success lately. Today, I tried some top water with a Zman and just crushed the Pickerel. I used a floating bullet weight secured with a bobber stop, 1/0 VMC Neko hook and a 6inch chartreuse Zman. With water temp just a hair above 64 degrees had me focusing on 3 to 4 ft. grass flats.

If you been checking my page you’d notice my style changed in the heat of the summer. I’ve changed from cranks and spinner baits into what is referred to as finesse. I’m using really light tackle and I’ve been showing worms. On this day it’s a green Powerbait 5 inch general, rigged Texas style with a nail weight in the tail. Sounds weird? Try it. It really does put fish in the boat. Good luck!

Dog days are tough and fish seem to have lock jaw. But you ain’t goin to catch them if you don’t, at least, try.

This is turning out to be a banger season for Seabass. Just a few pics to demonstrate what’s being caught. I found the big head boats like the Norma or Dauntless are a little more cost friendly and will put you on the same fish as the $200 dollar ones. I went out on both with the same results. That’s everyone will get their limit within a couple hours. Unlike, the more expensive trip, on the Norma, we boated keeper Cod. A keeper Cod is almost a 5lb. Fish and the lucky people boating one is walking with the pool. That’s about $125 with a boat of 25. Comes to if you’re the lucky person, you got a free trip plus $50 and a bag of freshly filleted fish. Make your reservations fast because they’re going quickly.

Looks like any day without a lot of rain and too much wind, if you find water you’ll get fish. I picked up a new toy called the Pond Prowler. I had the boat, Ashley Viola had the pond and this pond had a lot of some really nice fish. We had a couple hours of non stop action using one of my favs, Smithwick Rogue. Not only did we catch Bass and Picks on this fantastic lure but the Perch are ginormous in this pond! Try the Rogue out and enjoy this quarantine!
