IT’S A BUTCHER! (No Holds on this one.)
Suspicions of a Frankenstein coupling, but it’s definitely a butcher cover. The Capitol Records pressing (*) indicates an L.A. plant press that would match a somewhat later “trunk” cover pressing. Still… It’s a butcher cover and a decent space holder for a completist. The top seam and the spine are split, and the record looks like an ice rink after a hockey game, but…

MAYNARD LIVES!
Twenty years ago today, on August 23, 2006, one of the legends of jazz trumpet departed us at the age of 78, having recorded what was to be his last album a mere two weeks prior. Maynard Ferguson, a musical prodigy on several instruments as a youth, left his native Canada in 1948 in hopes of accepting an offer from American bandleader Stan Kenton to join his trumpet section. As timing would have it, Kenton was between bands, so Ferguson accepted jobs with Boyd Raeburn, Jimmy Dorsey, and Charlie Barnet, and over the next two years honed the road warrior grind that would carry him through decades of leading a small big band on the road. Sadly, there are no known recordings of his time on the Raeburn band, but there are some legendary live recordings from his days with Dorsey and Barnet, and the Barnet band entered the studio several times, preserving that slice of Ferguson music history for all time. Late in 1949, Barnet grew tired of leading a band, but this time, as that band fell apart, timing would work in MF’s favor. On January 1, 1950, he finally joined the Kenton orchestra, and, as Maynard would croon decades later, Stan Kenton made him a star. The rest, as they say, is musical history. The man recorded a lot of music under his own name, for many different labels, and with many different band configurations. (We have almost all of it in stock at any given moment.) Ask to hear some MF music the next time you visit. There is a Maynard Ferguson album for you, no matter how you take your jazz, jazz rock, or jazz pop. R.I.P.
