Does a student pilot really need an ANR aviation headset?

Not automatically.

Passive and ANR headsets reduce noise differently, and the most expensive option is not necessarily the right one for every student. Your training aircraft, headset connection, comfort, flying schedule, budget, and the features you will actually use all matter.

Before purchasing your first aviation headset, confirm which connection your flight school requires and try both passive and ANR options whenever possible. A headset may look excellent on paper, but it still needs to fit comfortably for an entire lesson.

In this episode of Brenda Knows Best, Brenda explains what student pilots should consider before making that investment.

Pilots, did you begin training with a passive or ANR headset? Would you make the same choice again?

If you’ll need charts, training materials, a headset, or any other pilot supplies for your holiday weekend flying, please make plans to stop by before we close.

We’ll reopen Tuesday, September 8.

We’ll share another reminder as the weekend gets closer. Thank you for planning ahead and for always supporting our family shop!

Buying a used aviation headset? Don’t stop after checking the plugs.

Before handing over your money, take a few minutes to inspect the complete headset:

✈️ Confirm the connector and aircraft compatibility
🔎 Record the model and serial number
🎧 Inspect cords, plugs and high-wear connection points
🎙️ Test the microphone and audio through a compatible system
🔋 Check ANR, Bluetooth and power functions when applicable

This printable "Used Aviation Headset Inspection Checklist" brings the key steps from our "What You Need to Know Before You Buy a Used Headset" series into one resource you can save or share.

Save this guide, share it with a student pilot and follow Brenda Knows Best for practical aviation-headset advice from Addison Pilot Shop Tiktok.

What is the first thing you inspect when looking at a used headset?

Buying a used Bose A30 can be a smart way to save money, but there are a few parts we recommend replacing before you start flying with it.

In this video, Brenda walks through how to change the soft parts on a Bose A30, including the ear cushions, headband cushions and microphone windscreen.

These are normal wear items, and replacing them can make a used headset feel cleaner, fresher and more comfortable.

This is also part of how we prepare quality used headsets before offering them for resale at Addison Pilot Shop.

If there’s another headset you’d like Brenda to show us how to refresh, drop the make and model in the comments.

PART 1/3 of "What You Need to Know Before You Buy a Used Headset" video series is live, and this is the plug guide every headset shopper should save.

Before buying an aviation headset through Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Craigslist or another private seller, confirm that its connection is compatible with the aircraft you plan to fly.

This guide compares:

✈️ Dual GA
✈️ LEMO/6-pin panel power
✈️ U-174/U helicopter
✈️ 5-pin XLR

A matching plug shape does not automatically guarantee compatible wiring, microphone impedance or aircraft power. Always confirm the exact headset configuration and aircraft installation before purchasing.

Save this guide, share it with a student pilot and watch Part 1 to hear Brenda explain why knowing the connection type matters before you buy.

What aircraft do you fly, and which headset connection does it use?

Thinking about buying a used aviation headset?

There are a few things Brenda recommends checking before you hand over your money.

In this video, she walks through:

• Connection types and compatibility
• Checking the serial number with the manufacturer when possible
• Looking for common weak points, especially cords and connection areas
• Checking the microphone
• Testing the headset through a compatible intercom or transceiver when possible
• Inspecting and replacing worn soft parts

A used headset can be a smart buy, but only if you know what you’re looking at.

At Addison Pilot Shop, we buy and sell quality used headsets, and we replace the applicable soft parts before resale.

Brenda will also be showing how we replace the soft parts on a Bose A30 in a separate video.

Have a headset model you want her to cover next? Drop it in the comments.
