DO: plant your trees and shrubs this fall.
DON'T: wait until spring to start planning.

Fall is a great time to plant. As things cool off above ground, roots keep growing underground, so anything you plant now gets months of a head start before next summer's heat shows up.

"The growing season in Zone 8 stretches from early spring to late fall, so we have plenty of opportunity to keep our hands in the soil."

That's Michaela on why fall in the CSRA isn't a wind-down season, it's a second growing season. Her fall garden: garlic, lettuce, collards, broccoli, and carrots, with fresh harvests right as everything else is slowing down.

Her other tip most people don't know: mums are perennial in Zone 8. Skip the compost bin and plant them straight in the ground for a boost of fall color that comes back every year. Pair them with other late-fall bloomers like Goldenrod, Joe Pye W**d, New England Asters, and Mexican Bush Sage for a garden that's still putting on a show well into November.

Swipe through for a look at what fall color and a fall vegetable garden can look like on your property, and stop by the greenhouse if you want help planning yours.

Most landscapes look great in April and forgettable the other eleven months.

The difference is layering: structural trees and evergreens (hollies, boxwood, camellias) for winter interest, hardscape like patios and fire pits to anchor the space year-round, then blooms that hand off season to season: camellias in winter, azaleas and dogwoods in spring, crape myrtles in summer, Japanese maples and asters in fall.

Fall is a great time to start a project like this. Roots get all fall and winter to establish before next summer's heat, so a landscape started now is already finished and beautiful by the time spring rolls around, instead of just getting underway when everyone else is.

Our design team will walk your property and build a plan for color and structure in every season. Schedule a consultation to get the conversation started.

Structure, hardscape, seasonal bloom, and evolving color: our design team's layered approach to a landscape that looks finished in every season.

Sharon runs our Tree & Shrub Lot, and every fall she tells customers the same thing.

"The plants aren't fighting the heat, you're not fighting the heat, and by the time next summer rolls around, those roots have already been working for months. It's the easiest win in the garden."

Swipe through a few of her fall favorites, all in stock now: camellias, Japanese maples, southern magnolias, yaupon holly, and oakleaf hydrangeas among them.
