A good grooming routine is about a lot more than getting your horse clean.

It’s your chance to notice the little things before they become bigger problems. A bit of filling in a leg, a loose shoe, a new rub, or some sensitivity across the back that wasn’t there yesterday.

Before every ride, take a few minutes to:

✓ Run your hands down all four legs, checking for heat, swelling, cuts, or tenderness.

✓ Thoroughly groom the saddle and girth areas, looking for dirt, rubs, or irritation.

✓ Pick out all four feet and check shoes for anything loose or unusual.

✓ Check your horse’s back and skin for sensitivity.

✓ Make sure your tack is clean, properly positioned, and fitting comfortably.

Knowing what’s normal for your horse makes it much easier to recognize when something isn’t quite right.

Good horsemanship starts long before you put your foot in the stirrup.

Before you add another half pad… 👀

More padding doesn’t always mean more comfort.

A half pad can be a useful tool, but it shouldn’t be a quick fix for a saddle that doesn’t fit properly. Adding extra thickness can actually change how your saddle sits and distributes pressure across your horse’s back.

A few things to remember :

✓ Wither and spinal clearance matter.
✓ The shape and construction of your pad make a difference.
✓ Correction pads and shims should be used with guidance from a qualified saddle fitter.
