Want to hear about how Dolly Parton fell in love with the Jumbie Jam? True story, and one we've been sharing with anyone who would listen for years. It was such an honor.

Ron here, co-owner of Panyard. Earlier today, I had a conversation with an elementary music teacher.

She told us that the Jumbie Jam is a favorite in her classroom. It's the instrument her students are always excited to play. And lately, they’ve been using their Jumbies to play songs by Dolly Parton in her honor.

What surprised her was just how many of her young students knew Dolly.

That gave us the perfect opportunity to tell her something they probably didn’t know: Dolly Parton has a Jumbie Jam story of her own.

Years ago, Dolly discovered the Jumbie Jam and absolutely fell in love with it.

That introduction eventually took Panyard's Randy Kerns (my brother and co-owner) to Dollywood, where he spent four weeks introducing visitors to the Jumbie Jam. But it wasn't just about teaching people how to play. Randy had the opportunity to share the Trinidadian history behind the steelpan and show visitors how Panyard pans are made and tuned.

And then came a day we’ll never forget.

During a parade through Dollywood, Randy and I marched along playing our Jumbie Jams just ahead of the old-fashioned car carrying Dolly herself.

Somewhere along the way, we even managed to get a photo together: Dolly, the two of us, and our Jumbie Jams.

When we finished telling the teacher the story, she immediately asked us to send her the photo so she could share it with her students.

And we loved that.

Because now a classroom full of kids who know Dolly Parton songs and love playing their Jumbie Jams get to discover this little piece of history connecting the two.

Music has a funny way of doing that. An instrument born from the steelpan tradition of Trinidad and Tobago finds its way to Dollywood, and years later, into an elementary music classroom where another generation is playing Dolly's songs on it.

We think Dolly would get a kick out of that.
