FIVE PLAYERS: Same game. Same draws. Five different habits. After 3,877 draws, one habit is 26 hits ahead, and the player who never gave up on his number is 10 behind.

A number from 1 to 36 is drawn every 4 minutes, all day, every day. We put five players on the same draws, each with one habit, and kept score on every draw.

THE CHASER plays whatever number has been hot over the last 36 draws. If it's coming up, he's on it.

THE DUE PLAYER plays the number that hasn't shown up in the longest time. He believes it has to come back sooner or later.

THE SWITCHER starts on one number and stays with it. After 36 straight misses he gives up and switches to whatever number just came out.

THE LOYAL PLAYER picked his number, 10, and never moves. No matter what.

THE NEAR-MISS PLAYER watches the numbers right next to his. If the draw lands one away, he takes it as a sign and moves to it.

Each player had about 107 hits predicted. Here's what really happened:

The Near-Miss Player: 120 hits, 13 ahead
The Due Player: 102 hits, 5 behind
The Chaser: 99 hits, 8 behind
The Loyal Player: 96 hits, 11 behind

The Switcher took the lead early and never gave it back. The Near-Miss Player sat right at predicted for days, then caught fire. The Loyal Player stood by his number the whole way, and his number ran cold.

Every player had the same odds on every single draw. Nothing about any habit changes what comes out next. The only difference is the path each one took, and the story that path tells.
