ROSH HASHANAH IS COMING

This Friday evening, September 11, begins Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

Rosh Hashanah means “Head of the Year” in Hebrew. It begins the Hebrew year 5787 and the Ten Days of Repentance, a period that culminates in Yom Kippur.

You may recognize some of its traditions: the sounding of the shofar, a ram’s horn, and eating apples dipped in honey as a wish for a sweet new year.

And there is something interesting about the timing.

Rosh Hashanah begins Friday evening rather than Saturday morning because Jewish calendar days are traditionally reckoned from evening to evening.

Over the next few days, I’ll share more about Rosh Hashanah, its traditions, and what they mean.

FROM AN MIT CLASSROOM TO A PLANNED OHIO FACTORY

In 2017, a group of MIT graduate students began exploring an alternative to electric vertical-takeoff aircraft. Their idea was a fixed-wing plane that could use a very short runway while traveling farther than an all-electric aircraft.

That classroom project helped give rise to Electra.

Electra has since built the EL2, a two-seat experimental aircraft that combines a gas-powered generator, batteries, and eight electric motors. The motors force air across the wings, allowing the aircraft to take off and land in an area about the length of a soccer field.

According to MIT News, the EL2 first flew in 2023 and has now completed more than 200 flights.

The next step could bring the MIT-born project to Ohio. Electra has announced plans for an $850 million manufacturing facility in Springfield and Clark County. Construction is planned to begin in 2027, with the company projecting 1,975 new jobs and eventual production of a nine-passenger aircraft.

The distinction is important: Electra has built and flown the two-seat demonstrator. The Ohio factory, nine-passenger production aircraft, job count, and production volumes remain future plans.

It is an intriguing path:

MIT classroom project
Student-built model
Doctoral research
Startup company
Flying demonstrator
Planned Ohio manufacturing facility

This is one reason MIT is worth following. Ideas developed in its classrooms can move far beyond the campus—and sometimes they may be headed directly toward Ohio.

MIT News article:

Electra’s hybrid, fixed-wing aircraft, which began as an MIT class project, has minimal runway needs and is much quieter than traditional planes. The company has announced an $850 million investment to manufacture its nine-passenger aircraft at a facility in Ohio.

GUARDIANS VS. ROYALS
Saturday, Aug. 29 — 4:10 p.m. ET — Progressive Field, Cleveland

Cleveland tries to stop a slide that started Friday night, when Kansas City handed the Guardians a 3-0 shutout and ended a seven-game winning streak.

The loss dropped Cleveland to 68-67. Kansas City improved to 61-75, last in the American League Central.

The standings give this one weight. Cleveland sits second in the Central, three games behind the Chicago White Sox (70-63), and holds the third and final American League wild card by two games over Texas (66-69). A short skid in late August is a different problem than a short skid in June.

Saturday brings a matchup of left-handers. Cleveland starts Foster Griffin (15-4, 3.19 ERA), who has carried the rotation through the second half. Kansas City counters with Daniel Lynch IV (4-4, 2.93 ERA), whose record undersells a season spent moving between the rotation and the bullpen.

Local coverage on Guardians TV and Royals TV.

Records and standings verified Aug. 28. Probable starters subject to change.

Something I've learned dealing with LLM tools — Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot: don't hand it your theory. Ask it for one.

If you explain first, you've written the reading — the model interprets your frame and elaborates it back, and you can't tell how much was already there. Ask instead and the interpretation has to be produced, which is the part that carries information.

It's also a decent detector. Explaining tends to get you agreement, because agreement is the smooth continuation of a confident premise. Asking gets you either something with structure or something hollow, and the difference is visible.

Not an absolute rule, more a sequencing: ask to find out what's actually there, assert to steer once you've seen it.

AI TECHNOLOGY: ONE STEP FORWARD, TWO STEPS TO THE LIBRARY

Here is a technology decision worth a laugh.

A few days ago, ChatGPT could make a video for me and I could retrieve the MP4 right there in the same conversation.

Makes sense.

I ask AI to make a video.
AI makes the video.
The video appears in the chat.
I download the video.

Simple.

Now?

ChatGPT makes the video.
The video appears in the chat.
I can WATCH the video.

But where is the convenient Download button?

Apparently, I may need to leave the conversation where the video was created, go to the ChatGPT Library, find the same video, open it, tap the three-dot menu, and THEN select Download.

We actually tested this.

The video isn’t broken.
The file isn’t missing.
ChatGPT knows how to download it.

The Download command is sitting over in the Library!

So somewhere in the wonderful world of artificial intelligence, we have reached this technological achievement:

AI CAN CREATE THE VIDEO.

AI CAN STORE THE VIDEO.

AI CAN PLAY THE VIDEO.

AI CAN DOWNLOAD THE VIDEO.

But downloading it conveniently from the conversation WHERE AI JUST CREATED IT?

Now we’re getting too ambitious.

Maybe this is a temporary bug connected with recent changes to ChatGPT’s file system. Maybe it is an interface oversight. Either way, I reported it to OpenAI.

Sometimes the most advanced technology in the world can still make you ask:

WHO MOVED THE DOWNLOAD BUTTON?
