As most of you know, each month we feature a local nonprofit organization for our monthly round-up.

Every August we feature SLV Pride! When you make a purchase you can round up and donate your change to support the yearly Pride Fest, and the other events they host throughout the year. SLV

Pride Fest takes place the last weekend of August, and this year, that's August 28th, 29th, and 30th.

Purpose Statement: SLV Pride fosters belonging and collective power for Q***r People in the San Luis Valley. We Create more equitable communities for all people through education, celebration, and advocacy.

Vision Statement: San Luis Valley Pride envisions a community where all bodies are celebrated, where gender is understood as a spectrum, and where q***r people are recognized as the Magical Gifts we are. Together, we work towards a more secure future, where the Q***r Community is not only accepted but embraced, where fear of showing authenticity is replaced with support and love. Our collective liberation is intertwined in a diverse, dynamic community where Q***r People are embraced, every person is invited to belong and express their most authentic selves.

We have a busy week coming up and can't wait to see you!

Join us on Wednesday, August 12th at 6pm as we welcome Claire Boyles on her Appraisals book tour. She'll be in conversation with Jean about this beautiful book about farming, connection to land, family, and finding a way forward when the way seems blocked.

On Friday, August 14th, from 4pm-6pm, come visit with our featured artist, Ayzlynn Sowards, for her come-and-go artist reception. Ayzlynn's art demonstrates play with contrasts, and the detail is amazing! She has framed and unframed prints for sale.

Then, on Saturday at 11am, Holly is back for her monthly story time. Come join her as she reads selections from our shelves.

And, later that same day, join us at 6pm for the Spadefoot Story Slam collaboration with the We Are Alamosa Project. The theme is "What roots you here?" and this special event will be recorded (with the option to opt out). We'd love to hear your stories about what roots you here, and what makes Alamosa home.

Strange Happenings in Alamosa

The day was hot and still, as it often was in the high desert. A hint of moisture in the air made it muggy, oppressive, and everyone was loosening buttons and collars as much as propriety allowed, avoiding moving in favor of porch sitting and lingering in the shade and mopping sweat from brows.

As the wind kicked up, some folks let out sighs of relief, figuring the daily monsoon would be through to cool things off. But that wind kept kicking up and getting stronger, sending swirls of dust and dirt through the street and sending many scurrying inside and others to get their horses under cover.

Black cloud banks built and a flurry of rain and hail pelted the street, sending any stragglers running for cover. Fierce lightning struck the bell tower on the church and the sound rang out amidst the thunder. Startled screams and cries rang through, too, but that was drowned out by the storm.

As quick as it come up, the storm was gone, the air colder, now, and some even swore there was frost on the horse trough outside the boarding house but most said that was imagination run wild, inspired by the freak storm and the oppressive heat before it.

There was little damage from the hail or the lightning, so folks just sort of settled back into their days, more vitality in their steps because of the cooler air. It was time to get
on with the day.

Few people noticed the oddly dressed strangers on the edge of town that day, and couldn’t quite figure out when or how they came into town - there wasn’t a stage coach that day, and these strangers just seemed to come out of the haze of the rapidly cooling summer air.

Stranger things have happened in this Valley than unknowns showing up, of course, but that storm… there was something about it that shifted the air and it never settled back in.

It became even stranger, truth be told, when that rich out of towner, A.I. Altman, who was planning to destroy our favorite watering hole with some big factory no one really understood, turned up dead.

And all those outlaws been running around, too, and those strangers who don’t talk or dress right… makes our town feel too crowded, and there’s just that strange shift in the air, still…

The Sheriff has asked us all to gather at the School House (the Narrow Gauge Book Coop) to try and sort out who killed that A.I. Altman. We’re supposed to be there at 5pm on August 7th to get our assignments and start sorting out clues. This mystery is mighty unsettling, and we’d like to get it solved sooner than later.
