Sensory places are a win win for people with intellectual and developmental needs.

Watch out for some in your area or create that environment for your ward,if you're a parent or caregiver of a person with special needs.

3 things I wished I knew before giving birth to a special needs person; and a gentle reminder for parents raising children or young adults with Down syndrome or special needs persons.

1. Celebrate effort, not just outcomes.

2. Build routines before expecting results

3. Allow learning to take it's own pace

Progress grows with Consistency, not perfection. So give yourself Grace on hard days.

Parenting a child with Down syndrome for 18 years and counting has grown me in ways I never expected.

Some days are still hard, but growth is happening on both sides.

I used to focus more on the hard days until George's counselor asked me to list all the good things he does every blessed day.

That assignment made me realize that I was holding on too much to the negativity that I was missing the fun part.

Today I choose to celebrate you as a Parent to a special needs person, and I want you to start listing your child's best behaviors inside their routines.

Come to it on the worst days and take some encouragement from what you had listed.

You are stronger than you think.
