Excerpt from my book "A Subtle Foe"

The thing about writing is, it flows as it flows. I am simply organizing the lunar sway (spiritus mundi) and the tide of thoughts and ideas it decides to deliver through me as a conduit.

I imagined that God speaks to me, saying simply, "I kept calling to you, and you did not come." And I answer quite naturally, "I couldn't until I knew there was nowhere else left to go." ~Florida Scott-Maxwell

As the disease worsened, I became confused more frequently, and when this happened, primordial fear seized the steering wheel. Emotional demons, (fear and paranoia), convinced me I could no longer trust anyone, (including myself). Nor was there any place, or anyone I could turn too. My condition quickly transformed into a pit of despair. It was a desperate condition marked by terror known as "the jumping off place."

Once one discovers he is in this mental state, it’s too late, for by now he has locked himself away in an inescapable psychological prison. The walls and bars made from emotions, and cemented in place by fear and panic. He is on the thinnest of ice, and his life will soon begin it’s graveyard spiral.

He will seek relief from all his old familiar places, substances, actions, and behaviors, but infuriatingly so, little relief is found. When I was in this condition, I recall that no matter how much I drank, snorted, popped, huffed, or shot, the only relief found was total oblivion. But with “oblivion,” also comes grave danger from every conceivable direction.

Exacerbating his plight, for one last time, he pulls himself up by his “bootstraps,” but, for the “real alcoholic” it is only a matter of time before the inevitable happens. Sadly, this fellow will never understand how or why, and even with the strongest of will and desire not to, he goes and does it again.

To make matters worse, standing by as armed guards are the emotional constructs he and his disease conjured from the abyss. They are the “Four Horsemen” Terror, Bewilderment, Frustration, Despair, and this loathsome foursome remain vigilant, thwarting any light from hope or love from passing their darkened picket lines. The riders will fight tooth and claw to keep this poor fellow confined to his hopeless and unfortunate situation.

At this moment, if one is ready to surrender, AND, if this time, one is truly beaten… many of us fell to our knees, uttering a desperate heart felt prayer…God!!! Please help me, PLEASE.

Unfortunately, far too many will not surrender, instead they drag out "denial" and continue down their personal road of destruction. A few eventually "see the light" however most do not....

Our conscious world speaks, listens, and communicates using words, ideas, concepts, values, and beliefs. But our unconscious world communicates through symbols generated by intuition, dreams, magic, myth, metaphor, and archetypes. A very different language indeed.

Communication between the two worlds must be interpreted because the inner world speaks a symbolic language that bypasses literal thought. Jung said that when we encounter the deep unconscious—whether in dreams, visions, or altered states—we meet archetypes. The Shadow, the Anima/Animus, the Child, Wise Old Man/Woman, Tyrant, Scapegoat, Trickster, Imposter, and countless others.

Fortunately, archetypal constructs can be guides leading us toward psychological integration. But they can also be formidable adversaries, confronting us with unfounded fears, conflicts, and suppressed memories that generate impulse-to-action forces. There’s no doubt that dealing with them is necessary, in fact vital, if individuation is to come to fruition.

An excerpt from the introduction of Outer Reaches of Inner Space (ORISA)

Our waking world promotes distraction. Noise, greed, and constant stimulation keep our attention turned outward. Yet beneath it all, we sense something else, and some of us find that achievement doesn’t mean fulfillment, possessions do not equate to meaning, that comfort doesn’t eliminate restlessness, and pleasure surely doesn’t mean happiness.

But that uneasiness is not a defect. It is a signal. It is the psyche calling us toward wholeness. It is the same “Call” Joseph Campbell tells us about. “The call” for one’s inner journey into self-consciousness. This book is about answering that call, albeit imperfectly, and often painfully.

Yet it also serves as a warning: inner exploration is powerful and should not be approached casually. Believe me, during initial journeys, there is nothing casual or recreational about such travel. However, these trips often bring one hope that individuation, healing, understanding, and contentment is possible. And, that happiness will be a probable outcome…The outer universe inspires awe because it is so vastly infinite. Our inner universe inspires awe because it is so intimately infinite. As above, so below. There truly are worlds within worlds without end…

An excerpt that is a small part of the forward for this book....

Initial forays beyond the ego—beyond the familiar thresholds of perception—are rarely gentle. For many, they are terrifying. At the edge of what we think we are, we encounter something ancient. Older than memory. Older than identity itself. We encounter the Unknown. And with it comes something even more primitive, something embedded deep within the human condition: fear. Not ordinary fear, but a primordial force. It does not arrive politely. It surges. It confronts. It resists.

For those of us who have walked through recovery, this terrain may feel strangely familiar. There comes a point when the structures we relied on—the ego, the stories, the defenses—begin to loosen. And when they do, something long buried starts to move. The true self, pushed into the background by years of unconscious living, begins its attempt to surface. And fear meets it head on.

Psychologically, that fear can feel alive—rabid, relentless, viciously protective of the very illusions that keep us confined. It attacks what is real in us because what is real threatens what is constructed. The ego does not recognize itself as the imposter; it clings, it defends, it distorts. And yet, for anything genuine to emerge, that grip must loosen.

The inner world we step into is not small. It is vast beyond measure—a labyrinth that stretches into what might be called the abyssal plains of consciousness. Some regions feel chaotic and disorienting, while others resemble a kind of waiting place—a psychic green room—where deeper aspects of the self, what some might call the true self or even the divine self, remain present but unseen, waiting for their moment to emerge.

Excerpt from ORISA
"Anyone" who wants to know the human psyche will learn next to nothing from experimental psychology. He would be better advised to abandon exact science, put away his scholar’s gown, bid farewell to his study, and wander with human heart throughout the world. There in the horrors of prisons, lunatic asylums and hospitals, in drab suburban pubs, in brothels and gambling-hells, in the salons of the elegant, the Stock Exchanges, Socialist meetings, churches, revivalist gatherings and ecstatic sects, through love and hate, through the experience of passion in every form in his own body, he would reap richer stores of knowledge than text-books a foot thick could give him. He will know how to treat the sick with a real knowledge of the soul, not opinion. (Carl Jung)

ORISA – Outer Reaches of Inner Space: The Antipodes
by Richard Moseley

A journey beyond the boundaries of ordinary thought, ORISA explores the hidden landscapes of consciousness, trauma, mythology, spirituality, and the fractured modern mind. Blending psychological insight with philosophical reflection, the book ventures into the “antipodes” of human experience—the shadow regions where pain, transformation, memory, and awakening intersect.

Inspired by the timeless idea that the outer universe mirrors the inner one, ORISA examines the unseen forces shaping identity, perception, and emotional survival in a distracted and disconnected world. Through poetic prose and uncompromising honesty, Richard Moseley challenges readers to confront the deeper realities buried beneath social conditioning, distraction, and fear.

This is not simply a book to read—it is a book to experience. A meditation on suffering, healing, symbolism, and the untapped depths of the psyche, ORISA invites readers into the outer reaches of inner space, where the unknown within becomes the final frontier.

For seekers, thinkers, survivors, and explorers of consciousness.
