This year marks 25 years since the September 11 terrorist attacks. As we honor the lives lost and the countless lives forever changed, you can visit a tribute to the heroes at Liberty Gardens downtown. A piece of wreckage from the Pentagon is displayed along the right-side pathway.

Liberty Gardens also recognizes many other groups and individuals. Flag poles, brick paving stones, and benches pay tribute to police, firefighters, and veterans, and a memorial wall honors soldiers from every war in our nation’s history.

The next time you’re on West Main Street near South Depot Street, take a moment to walk through Liberty Gardens and reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and resilience it represents.

On September 11, 2026, the Pfeiffer University Center for Health Sciences, in partnership with local first responders, invites you to join us for a Memorial Stair Climb as we pause to remember and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

This meaningful event challenges participants to climb the equivalent of the stairs climbed by many first responders who courageously entered the World Trade Center that day. Our memorial climb consists of 37 laps of the four-story stairwell at the Pfeiffer Center for Health Sciences, offering participants an opportunity to reflect, remember, and pay tribute through every step.

Whether you participate as an individual or as part of a team, your presence helps ensure that the sacrifices made on 9/11 are never forgotten. With every step, we honor the fallen and the enduring spirit of service, courage, and sacrifice. Pre-Register at pfeiffer.edu/stairclimb.

We need YOU for Landmark Lounge!

We're looking for volunteers to help make the Alameda Theatre tour on September 17 a success! We have a variety of roles available, but we're most in need of Tour Group Leads right now.

Tour Group Leads, Safety Monitors, and Stationary Tour Guides will need to attend a brief safety training on Tuesday, September 15 at 5:30 PM.

Volunteerng is a fun way to spend an evening downtown, meet fellow Albemarle history lovers, and support our mission to preserve and revitalize our historic downtown.
