INSTRUMENT OF THE WEEK - Northern Italian cello from ca. 1750

Take a look—and listen—to this magnificent cello from Northern Italy, dating back to circa 1750. Beyond its exceptional craftsmanship and powerful, rich tonal character, this remarkable instrument has a fascinating history of ownership among distinguished musicians.

In the 1930s, the cello was owned by Giuseppe Alberghini, principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic. Alberghini later sold the instrument to renowned cellist Bernard Greenhouse, and shortly thereafter, Greenhouse sold it to William Sapelli, who played the cello for many years with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Today, this extraordinary instrument continues to offer the depth, warmth, and strength of sound that have made it a compelling choice for generations of accomplished cellists.

No prior instrumental music instruction is required - we'll take care of all the basics! What's more, you don't even need an instrument. Did you know that Robertson & Sons offers a nation-wide instrument rental program offering high-quality violins, violas, and cellos at affordable monthly rates?

• Professionally Set Up. Every rental is carefully set up and adjusted in-house by our expert luthiers to professional standards, ensuring optimal playability, response, and tone from the very first note. Having a well-set-up instrument is essential to the success of every aspiring string player and will make learning more comfortable, rewarding, and enjoyable.
• Everything you need is included. The rental outfit includes the instrument, bow, case, and rosin.
• Multiple sizes. We offer violins and cellos from 1/16 through full-size 4/4, and violas 11” through 16 ½”, making it particularly convenient for growing children who may need to change sizes.
• Rent first without committing to a purchase. This lets a student determine whether they enjoy playing and stick with it before investing thousands on an instrument and bow.
• Rent-to-own advantage. The first six months of rent can be applied toward purchasing the rental instrument or toward another instrument in the shop
