So what is noblebright fantasy? It’s not new - noblebright fantasy is arguably the default for fantasy. Fantasy has historically elevated true virtues like courage, integrity, honor, and goodness. But when grimdark began to grow in popularity, some of us needed a word to differentiate the type of fantasy we write so readers could find it.
I believe a steady diet of grimdark is harmful because it devalues what is good and elevates a cynical worldview as “realistic” or “mature” or even “more interesting.” But goodness, kindness, generosity, and integrity are not only interesting, they are MORE interesting than cynicism and selfishness. To be clear, I am not saying that I prefer utopian fluffy fiction with no conflict and no challenges. Goodness shines when there is a temptation to do evil and the active choice to do good instead, even when it’s costly. Integrity is the choice to do the right thing, even when there’s every reason to be selfish or cowardly. What we fill our minds with is a CHOICE, and that choice changes us for good or for ill. The media we consume normalizes patterns of thinking that become part of us, shaping our character and our choices.
So noblebright fantasy is a word that expresses an ethos and a worldview, not a setting or a set of tropes. Cozy fantasy, epic fantasy, romantasy, steampunk, and more can all fall under the noblebright fantasy umbrella. what defines noblebright is that there are people striving to do the right thing because it is the right thing, not because it easy or expeditious. This doesn’t mean they will never fail, or that everything will always turn out happy at the end, but the choice to do good matters. Noblebright fantasy is noble (it elevates true virtues and the story ethos upholds these choices as noble rather than naive and foolish) and bright (the story is set in a world in which the characters have agency to affect the world for the better).
Phoenix Crate is noblebright. I am a Christian, so my understanding of “good” is shaped by Scriptural authority. Not all books featured will be Christian fantasy, but they will elevate what I believe to be good.
